I just picked up these 15 german 1/2 marks, for less than melt. Some are cleaned(three, maybe), but I couldn't say no for less than melt.

My first buy for 2013 (where did the time go?!?)... It goes into my Type Set.
I'm quite pleased. Any comments on grade are welcome.
    Thanks for checking it out.

Great coin for a type set. XF range? Is that a die clash on the obverse, in front of Liberty? Looks like it would line up with the shield and neck of the eagle...

    Hi John Anthony,

    Thanks!

The seller listed it as AU and I'm taking him at his word :) I am afraid I am in unqualified to grade yet.

I can't tell if it's a die clash... I hope someone else can say with certainty; my eyes swim looking at those marks for too long!

Thanks for the comments and interest, I appreciate it.

Thank you both very much! I am looking into die clash; I don't know much about it before today.
    Much appreciated.

What's nice about that coin is that it doesn't appear to have been harshly cleaned. It may have been dipped at one point and since retoned - I don't know - but it doesn't suffer from all the scratches of a scrubbing. And although they're common on 19th-century coins, I think die clashes add a lot of character. Great find!

It looked more like an old finger/thumb print to me. I don't really see anything on the reverse design that would cause that type of die clash in that location on the obverse?

The only clash that is available for this date is from the 1857 Flying Eagle. Not sure if the diagnostics match, but that would be an incredible find. And to think...you got it by chance because it has great eye appeal.

I didn't buy any coins for my collection last month...:so-sad:

So I guess I'll keep on singing that song..."she'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes, she'll be coming 'round the mountain when she comes...".

Doesn't look like it to me, plus the clash I know of was on the reverse of the quarter, not the obverse. I'll stay with fingerprint as the dark striations don't resemble a clash IMHO.
