I found a Justinian I in an antique shop about 25 years ago. This picture is not mine..it has since been lost...

I didn't even know it was a coin and neither did the owner. It blew me away when I researched it.

Now I focus on Roman wives Like Faustina (Marcus Aurelius) and Herennia (Trajan) up to Medieval British and Spanish.

I bet you and Mat have loads to talk about. :)

I actually like the wives on earlier Roman coins as well. I picked up a lot of them last year at CICF, since they were going pretty cheap. Even though they are like 10 times or more rarer than the emperor, I find many times they go cheaper.

That is a cool Justinian. That coin used to be more common, but his large bronzes like that have really been shooting up in price lately. Outstanding example, too bad its not yours. :D

I joined the site a few years ago but just started posting. My wives collection is in it's infancy and I can only afford more common issues like Julia Domna.

I'm really eager to get into the fascinating life and cruel death of Julia Mamaea.

I was there. But unlike Vietnam, I was in relative comfort and safety assigned to J2 in Riyadh.

I've seen your coins on Forum. :thumb:

I like both. Shame cause I sold a decent mamaea denarius recently, better reverse too at a decent price.

Alot of the ladies had an interesting life in one form or another. I tend to lean towards Lucilla & Crispina. But I like all the julias, plautilla and both faustinas.

Been a member from various forums (Forvm, CCF, Frederic Weber), already know many around here (Steve, Bing, Anoob, Cucumbor :)D, Salut Pot'),...). I'm a coinoholic

I collect mostly Greek coins but I'm always on the lookout for other nice things :hail:

Hey Batman, glad to see you here. I've missed you and some of the others from CCF. So far so good on CT. I think it might just prove out to be a great fit for me.

Although I had collected U.S. coins when I was young, I had left that hobby behind and hadn't collected coins of any type until after I retired in 2007. About a year after my retirement, I became interested in ancient coins -- mostly Roman, but some Greek as well. Having seen the great BBC TV series "I Claudius" when it was shown on TV, I found Roman coins to be even more fascinating than I expected, due to their historical significance.

When I first started collecting ancient coins, my collection had no particular direction, and I simply bought interesting coins, mainly through a dealer who had over 30 years' experience in ancient coins and antiquities. Fairly soon, however, I decided to concentrate on portrait coins (lifetime, if available) of the 12 Caesars, with a few additional coins that were from the Roman Imperatorial period (Cassius, Brutus, Marc Antony, Cleopatra).

At first I focused on 12 Caesars denarii and aurei. By the middle of 2009 I had completed my collection of denarii, and by early 2010 I managed to complete my collection of aurei. After some thought, I decided to extend my collection to include small bronzes (asses or dupondii) and large bronzes (sestertii) of the 12 Caesars. Of course, bronzes are only available for 10 of the 12 Caesars, and that quest has occupied me through the current period. I still need eight bronzes to complete my collection, and I find myself wishing I had started collecting them at the same time I was accumulating the denarii and aurei, since bronzes today seem to be scarcer and a lot more expensive.

Compared to most of the longer-term members here, the breadth of my collection is much more modest: when complete, I'll have a total of 48 coins -- 44 portrait coins of the 12 Caesars, plus four other coins from the Imperatorial period. Whether or not I'll extend my collection after that time is uncertain. I guess I'll just find out when I get there.

For those of you who are new to collecting ancients, I thought you might find a "group picture" of my 12 Caesars denarii interesting:

    Denarii copy.jpg

From left-to-right, top-to-bottom: Julius Caesar, Octavian (Augustus), Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Galba, Otho, Vitellius, Vespasian, Titus, and Domitian.

VERY nice 12 Caesars set. Makes mine look like the poor man's version. I'm impressed!

    uh-oh ... it's "my" turn ...

    Ummm, I'm stevex6 and I'm an alcoholic ... and a coin-aholic ... and an NFL-a-holic ... and an aholic-o-aholic ...

    => yes, I have a very addictive personality ...

However, I have a great big heart and I love the social aspect of coin collecting!!

I've spent my whole life collecting Dominion of Canada quarters and paper-money (my Granny got me started when I was five years old) ... but amazingly, lately somewhere along the way I've become interested in collecting ancient Greek and Roman coins ...

=> and during the past year I have been buying-up coins at break-neck speed (stupid speed) => kinda like a $200 habit every few days!! ... anyway, regardless of my obvious addiction, I am very happy with my collection (sure, my wife knows that I'm collecting again, but I'm sure that she doesn't have a true grasp of the amount of cash that I've been laying-down on my/our coins!!?) ...

NOTE => but as a reality/insanity-check => my best friend just spent $15,000 on a high-end snowmobile .... ummm, so I know that my $20,000 annual investment is far sounder than his, right?!! (am I right?) ... I think that I'm right ...

Anyway => I love my wife => and I love my fellow coin collectors => and I hope that you Coin-Talk fellas soon realize that I am nuthin' but a good-hearted collector with nothing but good intentions!!

My coin collecting interests are a bit random => but I can definitely say that I am a "HUGE" fan of the animal coins!! (Greek and/or Roman)

I hope that I end-up being a good fit in this coin-world ... so far, so good!!

    yeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!

Just to let all the fella's here know, Steve and I have an inside joke where you'll see me refer to him as Jerry (after Jerry Lewis). Perhaps you can understand why after reading his post above. :too-funny:

Oh yeah, he fits as Jerry Lewis alright.

Isn't it funny though. Looks like Caesar and makes jokes like Jerry Lewis. lol
