It seems that they will do two collectors sets, one with coins with the old portrait of Beatrix, one with the new portrait of Willem.
I don't know if they will do also circulation coins in 2013 with portrait of Willem, but surely the coins with Beatrix will continue to circulate, alongside the new, yet for many years.

I hadn't looked at the Dutch mint website in a year or more, they must have gone to all Dutch all day and no Engrish anymore.

Sure, why not - it's the Royal Dutch Mint after all. ;) And for customers who do not understand the language, there are tools such as Google Translate. Or use Chrome which has that translation feature built in. As for coins with Willem Alexander's portrait, first I read that the new circulation pieces won't come until 2014, but today I have heard different rumors.

We'll see. As I mentioned before, the commemorative and collector coins issued after 30 April will certainly have his portrait.

I love it how the rules about talking politics doesn't seem to apply to politics outside the US. (No, really, I do. Because if it was up to me, political discussions would never be off limits.)

From my PoV there is really nothing political about discussing the succession of the Dutch monarch, monarchs in constitutional and or democratic societies are supposed to be above politics.

I like Dutch coins, have been to the mint in Utrecht, but frankly I don't speak or understand enough Dutch to navigate the site. I know from my many many travels to Netherlands that English is spoken by most people there.

Sure, but setting up and maintaining a complete website in more than one language is somewhat expensive. Now in countries with more than one official language you cannot really get around that ;) but elsewhere ... As I wrote, for news and such, you can always Google Translate or similar tools. And if you want to buy their coins, it may well be less expensive to get them from a dealer "near" you.

The Japanese monarchy is more talked about/important than politics especially with no clear male heirs currently.

Hey, at least he's British. The Dutch monarchy is a collection of frauds who aren't even Dutch. They are German. The Netherlands was founded as a republic and it wasn't until 1813 that it became a kingdom.... a very unfortunate mistake. Not long after, that bloodline died out and we were "given" a non-blood relative that forms the current line of impostors and frauds.

Oh, did you know that if you kill someone in the Netherlands, you MIGHT get 3 years in prison, but if you throw a tealight candle at the queen's stagecoach, you'll be locked up without due process for just as long?

And did you know everyone there pays 50% taxes, yet the monarchy is conveniently exempt? And I wonder where they got their hundreds of millions of dollars.... yeah, I guess they "earned" them doing honest "work."

Don't even get me started on that family. They are parasites, mobsters, nazi party members. A Blight on my country. Bah. They disgust me.

PS To make this post somewhat "on subject": Beatrix's side profile on the Euro coins (as on the guilders before) is absolutely hideous. As unattractive a design as there ever was. Since her son is even more unattractive, I can't say I'm looking to seeing his flabby, flat faced, no-chin side profile replace hers.

Cute. Good to know that we have such experts on all things Dutch here.

I see nothing political about your posts, or most of the others. But there are a few others that if you were to substitute "Obama", or "Liberals", or "Conservatives", in place of "Beatrix", or "Queen", or "King", then they'd be moderator magnets.

Getting close enough to warrant observation already. And you can't get political and just add something randomly about a coin or so and feel you negated it. So normal warning, next political remark ( as determined by the Mods) will be over the line. As mentioned often ~ There are other forums intended for political, world events, and alien lifeforms one can attend and post unhindered.

No news regarding "Willem Alexander coins" from the Dutch mint's booth at the World Money Fair last weekend. (Did not go to the WMF myself; that is what others reported.). Ah well, we are patient. ;) In the meantime, here are three portraits of Willem Alexander:

    (Wedding 2002) http://www.herdenkingsmunt.nl/CmsData/FCKUploads/image/huwelijksvijfje.jpg
(Birth of Catharina Amalia 2004) http://www.herdenkingsmunt.nl/CmsData/FCKUploads/image/geboortemunt.jpg
    (New "Willemspenning" 2013) http://www.knm.nl/CmsData/Artikelen/Fotos/8/2/1/082187/082187_mi_or_1.jpg

This third piece is a KNM (Royal Dutch Mint) product but not a coin, and has not been issued yet. What portrait style/s will ultimately be picked for the circulation coins has apparently not been determined yet ...

Never mind - we have to deal with all kinds of off-topic threads here. Think of that nine-page Broncos/Baltimore topic which for some reason ended up here even though it has nothing to do with etc. etc. will stop griping right now. :D After all, there's news from the Netherlands. This coin ...

... will be issued tomorrow. Strictly speaking, it is not about the abdication but about Beatrix's announcement, hence the 28 Jan date. Mintage 20 million max. There will also be the usual range of proof, BU, card versions.

One I remember Erik posting about back in the day and kicking myself for not buying at the time - you could get them for face value back then. I cannot say I am a fan of all their modern designs for coins, but I do like these.

While we've finished the Chuckie-bashing, let's look at what happened in 1980 when Juliana abdicated: There were two circulating comemmoratives with both Queens on them, and then a two year gap. No circulating coins at all in 1981. Also, there were no circulating coins minted in 1949, the first year of Juliana's reign. (Wilhemina died in 1962).

We may see a commem or two, but nothing really new this year. (execpt maybe andorra oft delayed euros)
