The Canadien mint is selling their proof mint set for $229.99. That's a poopload of money yet there are only 20,000 being minted. Does anyone know how Canadien Mint with their lower (or at least set) mintages has done in terms of appreciation?
First off, I do not collect any RCM products unless they are coins for circulation where they offer them up at face value and free shipping (like the 1812 series 25 cent pieces and toonie to go with it). I go to lots of coin shows and watch the dealers almost try to give away 80% of all the stuff that they get in estate lots or the RCM product that are offered at big discount to them. That same 80% (maybe higher) of the modern RCM stuff, you can buy on the secondary market for 50-60% of issue price, sometimes less. The RCM has a very good marketing staff and induce people to buy these issues. There still are some things that are beautifully designed and are of numismatic value, but don't get into it for a profit. If you like it, buy it, preferably on the secondary market, regardless the mintage. I don't find that the RCM mintage figures are entirely accurate. It's supply and demand and the market for this stuff is very very thin.
Thanks for your insight Bill. The circulation numbers just seemed to be so small compared to those of other coins minted anywhere else. The mint does make some beautiful coins but I'll stick to the resale market.
