My grandmother gave me this a while back but i was too young to know what it is. Now that she has phased and my family has no knowledge of it, I bring it here to share and see if u can tell me what it says and what it is. Thanks. The nickel is so u can see the size.

I believe it is a Sede Vacante (translates to "the seat if vacant") coin issued by Vatican City issued after a Pope dies.

Sorry to hear your grandmother phased.

    therocktjb Wait, what**

He I think, was poking fun that you said phased, when you meant passed. Very childish. It is a beautiful token that you were given.

Phased, that's all. I meant no disrespect. That's a beautiful token and heirloom.

This medal has nothing to do with Sede Vacante. It was issued for the Second Vatican Council, initiated in 1962 by Pope John XXIII, and extended (in 1963) by his successor, Pope Paul VI, until 1965. This Council gave priests the authority to conduct the Mass in English, or other local languages, plus many other significant changes.

Nice medal. For your information, there is a dealer that specializes in Papal medals & coins. His name is Allen Berman. You can find Allen easily on the Internet. If you need his Email address, then just send me a private message through CoinTalk.

I'm sure that any information you may want could be found in one of Allen Berman's books. He is the author of a few books describing Papal coins & medals. You (or I) could email a photo of your medal to Allen if you want additional information. Allen is a strong buyer and seller of Papal material. I'll probably see Allen at the Liberty Coin Show in Connecticut on February 10th. Feel free to send me a PM with any questions you may have for Allen.

    Hello Revolution486,

I was informed this weekend that there are a lot of Vatican II medals with the obverse like your medal. They are generally unofficial strikes and as such may not be worth too much. Sorry that is all the information I can offer.
