Showed 1 $800 bid with a few minutes left, then some flurry and ended at $1053 ... book is 2800, might be cleaned high vf ... could get a 50% return? just guessing here

edit: not bad for a couple of mouse clicks

I think $1053 is probably a good deal for that coin. I couldn't tell if she'd been cleaned or not from the photos. Would be interested to see better photos of the coin if a forum member won it.

I'll post better pics when I get it. I think I got a decent deal.

I think you did real well Matt. Larry Briggs don't miss many.

Why do you see the SEGS slab as a negative? If anything, and because of the iffy photos, it should be a positive. Maybe my opinion is a little skewed here, but I've had decent luck getting former SEGS coins into PCGS plastic, including a couple of upgrades. While I would not put blind faith in their numbers, there are some decent coins residing in SEGS plastic, so don't let the name be an automatic turn off.

While I don't fundamentally disagree with your premise, if I may paraphrase; that the less than prime time reputation of SEGS can result in some bargains. I've also seen some real garbage in SEGS slabs. Mostly obviously cleaned coins that were still assigned a grade.

    Buyer beware.

I had my snipe set up for the lowest I would pay for a cleany VF... from the pictures I see that as the worst case scenario.

"Buyer beware".... yes. The same can be said for PCGS, NGC, and every other TPG real or imagined. You've seen some real garbage in SEGS slabs, fine. I've seen garbage in NGC and PCGS holders too, but the coins were genuine, and that is the key here. Throwing a grand at poorly photographed raw coin would be mighty risky, but the SEGS holder lessens the risk considerably, and at the price paid, the potential upside is greater than the down, especially since this was an ebay sale.

Thanks for the discussion, everyone. As an occasional eBay gambler, I really value this insight into the decision processes of pros.

It's funny I just saw Larry this past weekend. He was at a coin show I was set up at.

It looks like it could go either way--VF 35 or XF 40. However, it is a good buy for that date for sure. Reasonable price for what appears to be a "no problems" coin.

Glad I could help someone out finding a coin. If I had the extra money I would have flipped it last week when I first seen it for $900 with no bids. Hope you post pictures when you get it.

Got it in the mail today... I wouldn't say it's a "no problem" coin but it walks the line of market acceptable... but for what I paid. I will do just fine.
