That's quite a gamble for a coin whose pictures are the size of a postage stamp.

Oh, and it's quite a killing for whoever it was who bought this coin on Teletrade back in July 2012 for $260...and resold it on eBay 6 months later for $810!!! PCGS Cert Lookup here and Teletrade Auction from July here.

Yes. I noticed the last 2 bidders have very low feedback numbers. I'm wondering if someone hit the wrong number on their keyboard.

Or if they were both shill bidders, and the seller was hoping for a "sucker" to outbid them both. :)

Lost Dutchman, it's even worse than you think. They took as source picture the Teletrade images, and simply bumped the saturation. Some poor schmuck is not going to be happy when they see this coin in hand.

My bid was $250 with the intention of listing it for $350.

I was watching this one too...just out of curiousity. I was thinkin 200-250-ish range. Sheesh. I know its FS and has a lot of color, but I got a MS67 with similar colors (if not better if it turns out its juiced) for $30 shipped last year.

When I posted this thread, I was hoping you would see it Lehigh so we could hear your thoughts. Didn't know you bid on it. You probably spotted it before I did days ago. :)
    gbroke will probably comment eventually.

Heck, I would have offered 5 cents on this one, but I just play a collector on network TV. I have stayed at a Holiday Inn though.........

Oh, come on, who dropped $800 on that coin? I got some nickels that have way better toning than that I want to sell to them.

Yeah, but that one is an Appalachian Jefferson Nickel. You can tell by the certification number. If you think that one is expensive, check out the price tag on the two 44-D Appalachians in my E-Bay store. I can't post it in this thread for obvious reasons. IMO, Appalachian Jefferson Nickels are some of the most incredibly toned coins on the planet. They are widely regarded as AT but still bring very strong prices because they are in NGC plastic. Furthermore, I have seen them in the inventory of some very highly regarded dealers over the years, all who have provided glowing descriptions of the beauty of these coins. I personally own half a dozen of them and can attest personally to their beauty. FWIW, the price tag of that coin is at the high end range for an Appalachian but not out of line IMO.

The PCGS coin that sold for over $800 was a product of registry fever and not at all deserving of the price tag based on its eye appeal.

I stumbled upon that nickel as it was about to end and I saw the price jump by almost 300 bucks in the last few seconds.

Nice high grade on that nickel but somebody paid way too much. The coin looked like it spent a couple of cold nights in a cold car and now has that funky morning dew all over it. Could be why the seller placed such small pics.

I see nothing on the "appalachian" nickel that said it had to be AT. Unusual? Yeah, but not unheard of.

The price? Yeah, to me THAT is what is unheard of. :(

I was also watching this nickel and was going to put in a $300 bid until the price soared past that.

That seems to be the game. Buy at one of the other auction companies and then dump on ebay for the suckers.

I just ran across a Morgan I wanted on ebay. Real nice, NGC, toned, star, pedigreed. Very desirable but a steep buy it now. Started researching them to see what similarly graded, pedigreed examples of that date went for. Didn't take long before I stumbled upon the original Heritage auction for that coin from last October. So I signed in and saw that it sold for $100 less than he has it listed for and that included their buyer's premium.

Then I went to my watch list and deleted it.

People can try what they want but you can't expect there to be buyers every time you want to pay a premium from an auction site and then decide to turn around in 3 months and jack the price 12% to cover your new costs, plus extra, to get a little profit, in order to re-sell it. I might have paid the original price but I have to draw the line somewhere.

All a part of being an intelligent buyer in my eyes. Being patient, intelligent, and not getting emotionally involved until its in your happy little collector hands is the best way I know of to build a collection more economically.

Doesn't mean I am always successful at DOING it myself, but that is the goal. Sometimes a coin just starts to haunt your dreams until you "must have it". That is when the dealers have you. :(
