    Hello CoinTalk,
Thank you for accepting my membership. This is my first posting. I have had this nickel since 1984 who knows how long my Grandpa had it, he passed it down to me. I am submitting two photos to show what is puzzling me. Thank you for the advice.

    Welcome to CT.

Take the year he passed it on to you, and subtract 1984 from that year, and that's how long your grandpa had it.

Thanks for first grade math lesson.I received it in 1984 the year he passed away, along with his collection.fortunately for me he always had time for me & my questions regarding coins. Not once did he ever put me in my place with a condensing wisecrack. This nickel was was brought to my attention by my 9 year old daughter.who is slowing going blind, she loves to touch & feel every thing. The coin is flaked and the letters under are still slightly visible. the piece is a perfect fit.We just thought it was cool how the letters were still visible. 5079 posts 700 likes 13.782 percent Correct?

It's a partially detatched lamination. Caused by impurities in the metal. Not a lot of extra value but a cool one nonetheless, even more so since it's from gramps. I'd keep it.
Welcome to C.T.. Don't let the wise guys get to ya. There's always a few in a crowd.
Shame to hear that about your daughter.

Hi d.t.menace. thank you for your heartfelt reply. And yes we will keep it, it has been a topic of conversation with my daughter so thank you. Now I will have to explain to her what detached lamination is oh boy. Thank you again have a good day.

Are you sure? I would think if it was a partially detached lamination, you would be able to see the letters more clearly on the detached segment.
