/me raises hand A collection without any direction, goal or purpose is just hoarding. Nothing wrong with that, I'm currently hoarding anything silver I can afford to get my hands on. However, the hoarding does have a basic collecting direction as I've been able to start a very good Ike collection, I'm almost finished with multiple silver state quarter collections, and I'm assembling full sets of silver mint and proof sets from 1955 to current. One of the collecting goals I have as a silver hoarder is to complete a full $10FV roll of each type and year of silver state and ATB quarter. I think it's good to have a direction or goal to reach, that's what makes the hunt exciting, and the feeling of fulfillment when you get to that point makes it all worth it.
Perhaps you should consider putting together a 7070 type set which includes most U.S. coins minted after 1800. Really I'm sure that you are not alone having a wide ranging collection and there is nothing wrong with that. As long as you are not hoarding non-numismatic items in your coin collection such as beanie babies I would say don't worry about having little direction. Edit: Opps I see you already mentioned a type set.
Why not combining both ? I have a "buy what I like" roman republic and roman empire collection, with just one idea in mind : quality And I have several focused collections that give directions : Plautilla (I completed the whole ste of roman denarii minted for her just last week :smile), the Divi series minted by Trajan Decius, She wolves of the roman republic and empire. Here is the Plautilla set for your enjoyment : Q
I have lots of directions in my collections. I collect Scottish of course, hence the username, but I also collect Russia, China, Romania, Ukraine, Portugal, Poland, Germany, England, Britain and darkside USA stuff. Ancients? Yup, Syracuse, Egypt, Black Sea, odd and curious money, paper money and all forms of money.
i would argue that you DO have a direction. your collection is aimed aesthetically. you collect what is appealing to you. me personally, after a couple of months i found that i was focusing on finding varieties. i dont have a lot of money to spend on my hobby, so i find coins myself. its the "thrill of the hunt" that i find most satisfying.
There's nothing wrong with buying what you like. A few years ago, my budget was stretched buying U.S. coins, so I branched out into world coins, where I saw I could get "more coin for my buck." So for awhile, I just bought any world coin that I liked and then I started to discover select interests in my collecting theme. That's when I started thematic collections of world coins. So sometimes, just buying anything you like will lead you somewhere. Pay attention to your interests as you go. Maybe you already have a theme and don't realize it. For example, maybe you only buy toned coins, or only coins with portraits, etc. But the main point is to enjoy yourself. Let the collection build itself.
