I'm going to have to go ahead and kind of disagree with this statement. Tim/Detecto/CoinMaster/TechFizzle/who knows how many other monikers has been doing this for more than 4 years now. He has done it on multiple coin forums and multiple types of forums as well. One of his first was a metal detecting forum where he was CoinMaster. It was the same story there as well and he was eventually banned. A very nice lady got so angry at him she tore him to shreds way worse than I have seen on here and profusely apologized (to the other forum members). Among his exploits was "hunting" in a cemetery and asking for an id of some metal he found. When every single person who responded told him the disgustingly immoral and unethical nature of such actions, he ignored all of them. Then when he got an ID it was like "Sweet! Thanks!" I love Detecto and BNB for their comedic value. The one thing I am disappointed in is the fact that so many threads have been utterly wiped from the web due to their utter ridiculous nature. All this being said, "Tim will learn" is at the very best hopeful. Tim has been doing what he has done here for four years. He has been doing it on at least 10 forums. Consider that as much punishment as he has taken here, he's been getting about 10X that every single day. Well maybe not quite 10X as he is often banned, but that should be eye-opening as well. Have you seen any improvement whatsoever? I mean several of the posts on this thread show he has learned no more than Day 1 when he knew next to nothing.
Yeah, maybe I am just hopeful. I remember stupid stuff I did as a kid. I do think I saw an improvement with him deciding to try to buy slabbed coins, (shocker, Chris saying buying slabs is a good idea ). I was hoping him only buying graded coins would slowly show him a good coin versus a bad one. I seriously did not mind him starting lots of threads. At least it generated conversations, and a few of them turned out worthwhile. In that regard I viewed him as our "replacement Ruben". Some days are slow around here, and its nice to have someone creating something to talk about. Do I think Tim realizes what he doesn't know? No. Do I think he talked way too authoratatively on subjects he knoew little about? Yes. Do I think some were way too hard on a young kid who simply is overambitious? Yes I do. I don't care how uninformed someone is, or how wrong someone is on a subject, I simply view the VERY personal attacks on him as uncalled for. Disagree all you wish, prove to everyone how he is misinformed, etc. but I never thought PERSONAL attacks were warranted. I would have gone "internet board postal" on anyone saying the things to me that were said to Tim, in my eyes unprovoked. Paul, I would have never asked for BNB to be banned either. I read some of the threads you are referring to. If someone here is sticking up for Tim but was actively trying to get BNB banned I could understand your statement about hypocrisy, but I would never advocated either of them to be banned or have personal insults hurled at them. Just my view. Chris
Ruben was MrBrooklyn, but he has moved on from this site. I liked him bringing up news stories, I just wished he would have taken the time to actually comment on the story himself, instead of just blasting the board with a bunch of news stories. I will link a news story occasionally, but always believe I have an obligation to comment about what I feel about it.
Chris, Rather than having people like Detecto fill the void with something to talk about, wouldn't it be nice if the knowledgeable collectors on this site took some time to create meaningful and informative threads from time to time? I remember when we had the TOTW (Thread of the Week) feature, I was committed to creating a new thread every week. With the loss of that competitive feature, the number of informative threads that I create went way down. Then with the passing of Clinker, the board took another major hit in that regard. I submit that the reason why this forum has become so quiet is because of people like Detecto. They create a negative atmosphere that causes long term members to stop posting on the forum completely, making the void just that much bigger. And to have that void filled with the words of someone who has almost no numismatic knowledge yet tries to pass himself off as an expert even further damages the reputation and credibility of the forum. And while it is entertaining to get out the popcorn and watch the Detectos of the internet world explode, I submit that I can only go to the circus so many times before it ceases to be entertaining. You are welcome to your opinion that he is simply an exuberant child. But the reactions that he inspires are a cumulative effect of his selfish posting style. Creating thread after thread only to abandon them without ever posting again. Sending unsolicited PMs to members for advice, failing to say thank you, and then using that information in future threads to present himself as an expert. Over the course of time, people will naturally start to respond to him in a negative manner. You say you saw many PERSONAL ATTACKS towards Detecto. Personal attacks are against CT rules and are usually moderated. What I saw were not personal attacks, rather members using his own words against him. Another of his bad habits was posting contradictions within his own threads. And many of those engaging in that behavior had never made such posts in all the years that they have been members of this forum The fact is that people like Detecto and BNB become such a community disruption that it becomes necessary to ban them for the greater good of the forum even if they did not break forum rules per se. Paul
I can't imagine how much trouble I would have gotten into if I was a kid in today's information age. At least my shenanigans were limited to a 300 baud modem and local BBSs when I was a kid.
Lehigh, check your PM's... edited to add....yes, I'll give it up he did have a better grasp than Detecto, but still had others 'do his homework for him', just like Detecto.
Paul, not necessarily disagreeing much with your view either. I objected when people would bring up personal issues of his when he was simply trying to talk about coins, (maybe to try to get away from his personal issues). Why "poke him" about being unemployed, overweight, or something personal when all he did on a certain thread was say he liked a coin, or would like to own a coin like that. It was posts about his personal situation coming completely out of nowhere on threads that had nothing to do with the issue that I thought crossed the line. Yes, if a person wishes to share his personal issues on a thread, then he is asking for comments. If he simply is participating in a coin chat, why does someone need to say "Got a job yet to pay for any coins Tim?" or "You lose all of that weight you are hauling around yet Tim?" or , "maybe if you could hold a job you could afford a coin like that" for no apparent reason? Someone wishing to bring up my weight or ability to pay for a coin with me on this board for no apparent reason will have problems with me. Its no one elses dang business. Yes, I know Tim opened himself up to this by overly sharing, but I thought it should have been dropped and let him be a member here like anyone else and let him deal with his personal issues. Just my opinion, so everyone else can disagree.
Please stop blaming others for any abuse and ridicule Detecto brings upon himself. When someone (Detecto) posts a thread complaining of having no job and money, then follows it with a thread looking for praise for, or help with, something he just bought, the second thread deserves questions about getting a job even if those questions are off topic. I feel no guilt, nor will anyone make me feel any.
This is nice. Now Detecto has forum members getting upset/argumentative/whatever about how he has been handled. Reminds me of Louis CK playing hide and seek with his daughter. If Detecto really is a troll (which I don't think), he's got to be loving this. Maybe Lehigh is right about disruption etc.
I am dropping it, sorry I said anything. I agree, the worst part about some members is the disruption/arguments created amongst regular forum participants. I should have just let it go earlier.
Best at being disruptive just because that is his nature, or do you think he is specifically trolling?
I believe it is intentional and that he loves every minute of it. He is probably reading this thread while eating a bucket of popcorn and laughing like Dr. Evil.
It is definitely possible and if so jolly for him, I guess. That would explain how he has seemingly gotten nowhere in four years. The reason I think it is not trolling is among other things how he opens up a thread and then ignores it even when people directly ask him questions. Usually you would want to keep the flames fanned as it were. I am more of the opinion that he is just savvy enough to ask questions that will get responses but then ignore them. But you could definitely be correct. Lol at clip.
