Can anyone recognize coins in these pics? (craigslist post I am interested in)

Saw this in the local Craigslist.

    http://norfolk.craigslist.org/for/3563664539.html

I am interested but not getting good feeling by person I have contacted. He returned an email to me when I asked if the coins were modern or vintage with the following: "i really dont know i guy owes me money an he gave them to me to sell to try to get my money".

I have since sent back another email asking for better pics to see if he is able to produce them.

Would anyone take a chance on this? Looks to be some potential but heading to Elizabeth City at night to pick up coins may be a bit on the "risky" side. ha.

For $100, you should be able to get 14-16 pounds of foreign coins not including silver issues. I'd pass!

    rickmp Frequently flatulent.

If they were giving them away I wouldn't go near that type of deal.

[h=2]"242 coins for sell" and "have to come to me i dont have a ride anywhere"[/h]are definite warning signs. Stay away.

He did provide some closer photos but not seeing much yet. More than likely will pass but it is still intriguing.

Here are a couple of closer photos. coin.jpg coin 2.jpg

Everything in those pictures is face value. A quick glance shows five 10 yen coins (50 US cents) and about 30 Canadian cents. I would pay $10 for that lot just for my 7 year old daughter to do some fun research.

I have offere $40 for the lot. We will see what happens. For $40, 242 would come to abot 15 cents per coin. That may be worth the investment. There may be some silver in there like Lon pointed out.

The Philippines coin on the right looks like 1960 to me, which is not silver. I can't see the date on the Canadian coin so I couldn't say. It has to be 1966 or earlier (68 is a lesser percentage). As others said though, this is maybe worth $10 tops, and that's if you have something in mind you want them for, not if you're just looking for a deal.

If you've offered him $40 for that garbage, please pm your email address so I can send you the scoop on a couple of bridges I have for sale - real cheap - in the San Francisco Bay area.

The Philippines coin looked like a 1908 or something to me, but I admit I didn't get my Krauss book out to check the design. And I can't see the date on the Canadian either, but it has the look of a .800 silver dime.

Well I understand everyone saying that it is probably not worth my time. I definately would want to meet in public place with this person if I decided to get the lot. Still negotiating a price.
But with that being said, for a new collector like me, if there are indeed 240 coins here for$40 that is about 15 cents per coin which I don't think is so outlandish. It's a good opportunity for me to learn different coins and recognize them in the future. Plus I think will be interesting to go through them with my step son. I think he will enjoy the different countries we can talk about.

I think its a TREMENDOUS idea to get a group of world coins to go through and teach yourself and your step son. No one is disputing that in the least. I think they were simply saying its not the best deal you could find on such coins.

However, its just $40. As a first purchase of world coins, I bet you would get at least that much enjoyment out of them, so I would not begrudge the purchase.

I plan on doing the exact same thing with my son, using coins to teach him history, geography, etc. Fortunately Dad has tons, (maybe not literally "tons", but tens of thousands), of coins to use already. :D

Medoraman has the right of it. I got started collecting world coins in a similar fashion nearly two years ago when I bought a 2 pound lot of coins on Ebay for $32.

The lot had a good mix of coins from all over the world, as well as some interesting ones from the 19th century, though nothing particularly valuable.

While in retrospect I realize that $32 was probably too much for the lot, the joy and education I got has more than made up for it. I saw for the first time many dozens of types of coins that I had never seen before. It really opened a whole new world for me.

    Good luck and have fun,Angelo P. ;)

moneyer12 i just love UK coins.......

the best way to start collecting foreign coins is to buy a lot like this, it may be over priced, at 10p a coin in the uk it would cost £25 which is about what you paid. but the pleasure they will give you in sorting and cataloging will be worth it...........

I see Greece, I see France....& Belgium, Italy, Canada, Philippines, Malaya, Taiwan & Germany. Your Phil. 10c looks like a '63 to me.
There were a very limited amount of lead patterns produced that year, but has the wrong tone. This lot wouldn't see $20, on a good day. BTW, it's not garbage, just not worth the $$.
