Are you looking for high MS examples? I'm still seeing circulated rolls going for right around melt value...
I'd like to find this cheap silver. Every time I look, people are selling stuff for 300% of melt value.
Well if anyone wants to hear, i was talking to my local coin shop guy late last week and he was saying that 90% stuff is drying up quickly. Hes starting to see premiums attached to buy prices instead of being under melt, which he thinks is because supply is getting tighter and its becoming harder to find. I agree with his assessment because when i started re-buying a year ago, I was already noticing a somewhat tight supply, and very few real deals to be had, anywhere. I can only assume its going to get tighter unless people run out of options and start dumping them back into the market
Well, I sold a few rolls of Roosevelts and Mercury dimes at the weekend coin show at 22.3x face, and just now I picked up a lot of 100 silver Roosies on eBay for $203.70 shipped. Not sure whether I should be buying or selling silver at the moment, but as long as I can sell for more than I pay, I'll keep doing both.
If you're patient, you can get melt or below pricing, even on eBay. jeffB, that's a nice score for under melt. Depends on the 90%, I've been landing state quarter silver proof sets for an average price of under $28 shipped, which as of today's melt is under by about a buck. And silver's been going up, not dropping, $3 plus territory since the beginning of the month.
90% junk silver coins have be selling well over melt for a while now. You wonder if all of these people don't have a LCS to go to instead. I guess sitting on the couch and spending more for what they are worth matters to some people. Personally I am patient and will go to my LCS and get 90% silver coins for melt. Ebay is very convenient but just way too over priced.
It is my dream to have a coin shop here, then I could leave fleaBay forever! I am jealous of you all who have that luxury.
My LCS charges +1x over melt and sales tax on junk silver so I`m better off being patient and trying to snipe a decent deal on ebay .
Living in NH, we are lucky we don't have a sales tax. I can never find anything decent on eBay so I just go to my LCS.
I agree. I actually see the best prices for US junk at shows, but have a world coin shop nearby that basically charges even market pricing on world silver junk. Ebay has been much harder to score deals on for a while now unless you are willing to spend a little. Small lots almost always go for well over spot. The last time I bought "junk" on ebay was for a mexican lot, with some gold 2 pesos and quite a bit of BU silver, all below spot. The lot was around $300 in that purchase. The lots between $40-100 seem to go way high.
Where I live, the nearest "real" coin shop is 20 miles away, so an investment of $6 in gas and a couple hours at least just to get there, look, buy and get back. eBay is certainly much more convenient most of the time - even if I'm spending the same amount of time looking online at least I'm doing it at home. Single coins are rarely ever had for anywhere near melt, especially factoring in the shipping. But, you can find stuff in smaller quantities, you just have to look hard: http://www.ebay.com/itm/330857463796?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/221175440981?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 The quarters ended up $1.20 under melt total with shipping included, and the dimes ended up $.12 over melt total, free shipping saved it there. If I were to travel to the LCS to pick up those small lots it would have cost me more than eBay in this particular case. Even these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/230914702618?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/230914703251?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 http://www.ebay.com/itm/230914705405?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 All 3 with combined shipping came to $.11 under melt. I just missed a 4th one from the same seller for $24, which would have brought the total to $5 under melt for the lot due to the same shipping cost. Now to be fair, I still haven't found a single close to melt deal on Morgans or Peace dollars on eBay. For those I'm sure the junk bins at an LCS might offer a much better shot. I admit this is not the norm, and it takes a little bit of work to find this stuff. I'd offer that 99% of silver auctions are over melt, and probably 95% of those are ridiculously over and can't believe people would pay that much for it. But, I guess you can also look at that as a business opportunity if you've got the stomach for dealing with it.
You will almost never find a silver dollar close to melt at a LCS. You haven't been able to since before the mid 70's at least, (that is when I remember my first LCS visit). Silver dollars at shops have always sold at premiums, regardless of silver is $4 or $40 an ounce. Maybe if silver hits $100 or more the premium would go away.
There are still some deals on foreign silver, even in small lots. Maybe 10% to 15% under spot including shipping. Persistence is the key. (Not being bothered by a much-less-than-perfect coin helps, too).
My LCS will sell junk for spot, but even low grade Peace and Morgans go a few dollars over spot and just not worth it to me. If you want to fine Morgans or Peace dollars for spot or under, craigslist is your best bet.
and in my eyes silver is high at its current price. i am happy i got into this stuff when it was cheaper
Luckily for us that are able to get 90% at melt, the major dealers provident, apmex, etc buy 90% at 1% or less under spot depending on the quantity. They are able to sell for much over spot. I think this is a great sign.
