My First substantial purchase, the birth of my collection!

Having spent the last 7 months (with an average of 3 hours per day) reading numismatic books/literature, researching wonderful sources such as CoinTalk, traveling to the local coin shops with my 16x loupe to look at any and as many coins as possible, and searching bank rolls for errors, I have finally made my first real substantial purchase. My collection has finally been born and I am truly elated and proud to be the owner of this fantastic 1942 Walking Liberty Proof, NGC graded PF-66, with a green CAC sticker topping it off. I love the coin, and like so many other members have advised, I purchased the coin not the slab (but in this instance the slab is a great bonus no doubt). I have been drawn to beautifully toned coins and this one is no exception as you can see in the pictures. I would like to thank the wonderfully helpful and kind CoinTalk members who went out of their way to take time and provide me with really great information and direction (you know who you are). Ultimately I am thankful to every contributor to this great site, it is a superb base of wisdom and is invaluable to collectors of any and all levels.

P.S.: I always try to take the best quality pictures possible but as I am sure many of you know, proof coins are especially difficult to photograph as was the case for me with this beauty. I did the best I could and I hope all of you like them.

Wow weirdfishes. You certainly came out with guns blazing. A high grade walker is awesome enough, let alone a proof. Stunning coin. Congrats!

Looks to be a nice coin, and I am glad you acquired a CAC example.

Just as a friendly FYI, 16x is far too powerful to use as a grading or basic examining glass. For varieties it is fine, but I highly suggest you invest in quality 3x-6x glass. While it may seem costly, the Eschenbach 11869 is superb (3x6x9x) and although not as powerful as your 16x, it can still be used for identifying all but the most minor of varieties. Again, congrats on the nice pick up.

You wanna see an ugly coin, try 100x on a microscope. :)

Thanks you guys! I agree, Walkers are (IMHO) one of the most beautiful designs, not just of the 20th century, but in all of numismatic history. Even before seeing the light which is the world of collecting coins, I knew this design was stunning. For me, it is right there with St. Gauden's HR Indian Head Double Eagle Gold Piece, The Flowing Hair Large Cent, and Joseph Wrights Libertas Americana Medal. Maybe one day I can add those beauties to the collection (winning the lottery sometime soon is part of my custom designed financial plan) but until then, Miss Liberty Walking (Proof) is just fine!:)

Looks like a heck of a coin and a great way to start to build a set. However, I also agree that 16x is generally far too much magnification.

I love it. Be careful though, proofs are very addictive.

Dang...nice coin. Two questions - 1) How did it find you? Is there a story there and 2) About how much did it set you back?

...let alone a proof, let alone a colorfully TONED proof is more like it!
