Its pedigreed to one of the most famous/desirable original Hobo nickel creators.

To me, these cross over from numismatic to works of art. Its like if Picasso would have scribbled on an ASE, the ASE doesn't matter, its the art on it.

I had a feeling that piece was going to bring huge money. My guess was in the 15k range, but over 24 k with the juice....I was way off.

I've always like hobo nickels, but never understood the high price tag. This one I really don't get!

Hobos are like any other form of art, and some artists command huge dollars.

Now are these artists that do these nickels famous? Is this the equivalent of an Andy Warhol painting? Can I create a nice design and it sell for big bucks?

Well, there's a bunch on the 'Bay right now, with the highest price in the $700 range, and many in the $100 to $200 window. I think many of these are modern examples... I assume the originals (and depending on the artist) command a premium. Still, I'm fascinated by this particular genre.

Yep... I always wanted to be a hobo... ride the rails, camp out, eat some stew, and carve hobo nickels all day long. That's the life; no responsibilty, no worries, no mortgage, no wife, no kids, etc., etc.

This one is by my favorite modern artist Howard Thomas. Got if for about $250 a while back.

One of the jokes I read about hobos (persons not the nickels)
was that hobos in the 30's worked day labor and got drunk at
night. While todays hobos just get drunk.

Thanks for the post....I recall a forum member here at cointalk being a HoBo Nickle artist.. I donot want to publish his real name but his user name was "BillZack" he created a HoBo Nickle for my son AJ that I really admire and have put away..it portrays a young boy as is my Son.

    Great post!

And if Mr. Billzack comes across this post..just want to shout out a hello to him with many thanks!

I think his actual userid is BillZach - and yes he does amazing work. I concur that that the top artists do a really nice job but wish that so many others would leave this work to the professionals. Too many nickels are getting ruined by scratch "artists".
