What do you make of this toning? Looks to me like a rubber band caused it. I'm sending this one to PCGS in hopes for an AU grade.
To be honest, it looks like an experiment in AT that went bad. I do not think that it will slab. But, good luck.
Couldn't that pattern be similar to end of roll folding/toning or perhaps it was wrapped in a handkerchief type fabric too small to cover the entire piece, leaving those four lines?
Yeah, it sure looks like it could have been caused by folds of paper. Were these coins rolled? As far as AT vs. NT goes, I'm no expert, but it looks pretty old and crusty. I like the eye appeal.
Looks like AT to me, and I WOULD NOT send it to PCGS, as it will get a "no grade" for questionable toning.
But as the case with all trade dollars, a "genuine" slab or even "questionable toning" would be better than raw, especially when attempting to sell this heavily counterfeited series.
It's not from a rubber band. That would leave a dark/black stripe. More likely from a ribbon or string, or folded paper that was a little too small. It looks genuine to me. I think it has a fair shot at grading cleanly. As others have said, even "genuined" at least says it's authentic. I am not a fan of splotchy toning. Usually it will hurt the grade too. I would not say it is eye appealing. Lance.
Could be natural, but this almost looks like it goes beyond toning and may outright get a details for corrosion. Either way that's really ugly looking, no offense. Even if it's natural toning the toning is very dark and splotchy; it has very poor eye appeal IMO. I would never buy a coin that looks like this. Not sure what PCGS would say but if I were grading it I'd call it "AU details; corroded."
i would have to agree with you. it looks more like corrosion than real toning. getting slabbed genuine might help ease the worries of being fake or not. :thumb:
Looks like it was dipped then AT , Like Frank said an experiment in doctoring gone bad , looks like corrosion too . It won't grade . IMHO
Looks like a real Type 2/Type 2 , but it will get a details grade . If it is fake it's one of the best I've seen .
