The building I work in was built in the 1900's. I was cleaning out an old bookcase and found this on the floor. What an amazing find I thought. I do not know if it has been there since 1923, but thought it was in good shape. I did not clean it and handled only once and put it in a plastic bag so we (other employees) could all take a look at it. Owner has had this building since the 60's and is amazed no none has ever found it or cleaned behind the bookcase. Any thoughts on this find value would be appreciated. Been though many sites but like real coin enthusiasts input! Thanks

Very cool find, Micro! Why can't that every happen to me :) I don't clean behind my bookshelves... Ever.

1923 is a common date for Peace dollars but I'll leave the grade question to the experts.

Obverse side, I can see a die crack on the hair bun under T and Y in LIBERTY, and a smaller one right off the bottom of the bun. Numerous scratches and hits, and what looks like some rub in the hair.

Reverse side, has some contact marks, though not as bad as the obverse, and some wear on the eagle. Pictures are a bit fuzzy, but it looks at minimum AU.

Wish I found a Peace Dollar like that. I found 1 dime and 5 pennies on the ground last night at my hockey game, not as cool as finding a Peace Dollar though!

Is the die crack leave any importance as far as damage goes? I would think crack lines are a bad thing.?

There are some who collect die crack coins, and very small, if any, premium. I have several in my collection, including some late 50s Washingtons with die cracks.

It's a common occurance at the Mint. It usually doesn't affect value it all depends on how severe the crack is.

That's a nice find, but the coin is a 1923 S coin. Retail price can be from$38 to $60.

i disagree with this. if it was uncirculated and graded it would start bringing those numbers but i would expect to be able to purchase this coin from a coin store for a few dollars over its melt value, so around the $26/27 value

Which is true, unless you're selling it on eBay, where it would sell for a minimum of $35. I bought $90 worth of junk silver at the LCS and it went for $138 on the 'Bay. Even after all costs, I still made $20 plus.
