It says penalty for private use: $300? What does that mean?

Like others have said, your belief is that it is a Silver Set. Kudos to you, I got a few of that year myself! You got it for a steal too, which is always good. Would be nice to know how you know it's Silver though...

Thank you for the set up to the answer!

It says so. Right on the label! "S01" means "Silver 1 Set". "P01" would mean Proof 1 Set.

The Reason for purchasing this sealed set is the possibility of a DDO but alas, no DDO.

However, given the $14 total price paid, there will be no hesitation in putting this one up for sale.
I kinda like it when things work out.

The government got tired of federal employees taking and using stationary that was bought at the taxpayers' expense. This is a warning message intended for government employees not to take and use official government envelopes and letterheads, etc. for their own personal use. While well intended, I have my doubts as to if such fines were or are ever imposed, though.

It's hard to determine, especially nowadays, if someone uses "official" mail addresses for personal use. I'm in the Army, and we have official mail, so it's hard to pinpoint at times.

My question is why did the original owner have it this way still? I see these all of the time, people having "original sealed government packaging". Why would you buy these if not a coin collector? If you are a coin collector how do you leave coins unopened in the package? Don't you want to, um, enjoy seeing your coins?

Maybe they bought them to speculate on, and then passed away and their family is selling them off not knowing what they really are.

Lol, at least I open my packages and oogle them a little before putting them in "the pile". :D

I don't think there's such a thing as an unopened box of coins on eBay. What kind of idiot auctions off an unopened box? How would you know you weren't sending your customer a box of dead roaches and rat droppings? This guy just probably didn't know the difference between clad and silver proofs.

I will frequently buy 2 of an item. One I open and one "for the future", whatever that may be. Maybe to sell, maybe to put in an album. But if I'm hit by a bus, my heirs will get a bunch of unopened stuff.

Why would you think there is no such thing as "an unopened box of coins on eBay." when I clearly just purchased one?

I have purchased many in the past and will continue to purchase these in the future as there appears to be plenty available from time to time.

I, like many others, would sure like to know where these come from and why in the heck they weren't opened? But then, I guess the answer can be found with todays current "trend" of not opening coins purchased from the US Mint of which, again, there are plenty!

For this particular purchase, as I stated, I was hoping to come across a DDO Kennedy, which is easily distinguishable and quite valuable. For the 65 - 69 sealed shipping boxes, the intent is the same with the added option of finding Deep Cameo Kennedy's.

From what I've seen, there were people out there who ordered Proof Sets in lots of 1, 5, 10, 25, and 100 and all other quantities. Why they weren't opened is unknown but its really unimportant to the fact that they just weren't.

Why do "idiots" sell these? Simple, they know that there is an equal amount of "idiots" willing to buy them.

Ah, well...I stand corrected. My apologies for calling y'all idiots. I know for a fact there wouldn't be any unopened boxes of coins in my house. :)
