Here's one to keep you going - German 1939 B 2 Mark - Vienna mint. To me it is scary that some people are so intent on re-writing history that even displaying a coin like this is frowned upon.
I do not see anything creepy about that coin, but I do understand how it draws bad feelings from others. What really offends people is the image of the swastika. Paul von Hindenburg was a war hero (in Germany), and was said to personally despise Hitler. Since Hindenburg was such a hero to the people of Germany, the Third Reich used his image on their 2 & 5 mark coins. I may have one of the largest collections of these on CoinTalk( http://www.cointalk.com/t216604-4/ click here and scroll down) could be wrong, but I don’t display them often because of the feelings they stir up in some people. My great grandfather fought in WWII in the US Air force, and I’m very proud of that, and I am a proud American. My grandfather was stationed in Germany, met my grandmother and that is where my Mother was born. - When I collect coins it’s not because I support the country or regime, I’m totally separated from that. I'm in to history, and I'm a little partial to German history.
Is this coin one of them as CREEPY COIN? THE PAST..... On the evening of April 14th, 1865 at theater, President Abraham Linconl with his wife at balcony while watching a show an stage actor of Maryland shot him at the back of the head ( skull break- attribution ) name John Wilkes Booth.
The FUTURE? A crack Die variety, Lincoln Memorial Building split in Half with an images of explosion at the Step. this coin was on my website year 2000. the Past the Present and the FUTURE.. Almost happen on 2001 a plane landed on PENTAGON Building on September 11. A creepy one too?
The Present: Presidential Historian Society voted the top two great leaders served in oval office (White House ). number 1 Abraham Lincoln, Number 2 Frank delano Roosevelt.
Hindenburg was president of a formally democratic republic, a political system that he disliked. The last few chancellors he appointed before Hitler governed mostly based on "emergency decrees", ie. the parliamentary consent or approval was not really necessary in many cases. Problem was that these governments did not have long lives, and they had frequent elections. Hindenburg may have disliked Hitler because of the personal background (not a "von", not a general or anything like that) but he and his entourage surely considered Hitler to be a politician who would bring "stability" to the country, even if that involved a kind of permanent emergency decree ... Not sure what any of this could have to do with "re-writing history" though. Christian
I think History is distorted and re-written every day. Depending on what country you live in plays a major role on the history you are taught. - And as Winston Churchill put it "History is written by the victors". “Hindenburg personally despised Hitler, condescendingly referring to Hitler as that "Bohemian corporal". Hitler repeatedly and forcefully pressured Hindenburg to appoint him as Chancellor, Hindenburg repeatedly refused Hitler's demand. Though 84 years old and in poor health, Hindenburg was persuaded to run for re-election in 1932, as he was considered the only candidate who could defeat Adolf Hitler. Hindenburg was re-elected in a runoff. Although he was opposing Hitler, the deteriorating political stability of the Weimar Republic let him play an important role in the Nazi Party's rise to power.” - von der Goltz, Anna, Hindenburg Basically what you're saying Christian. Sorry to get off topic, anyone have any creepy coins?
Reminds me of this one (see attachment); a Parthian drachm coin from the 2-3c BC. What you see is a Persian king killing a Greek warrior (hoplite). And no, I do not have that coin. It is a pretty rare piece that a while ago was part of an exhibition in Munich. The ruler depicted on the other side is Vahbarz according to the museum. Want to see the stabbing king in more detail? http://www.staatliche-muenzsammlung.de/images/persis72dpi/vahbarz-rueck72dpi.jpg Christian
I wonder why you never see these 2 together at the same time ????? Be afraid, be very afraid.
