We were used to such tinfoil hat comments from the peanut gallery. It shouldn't affect him too much. OP, what about a compromise to service members? Tell them you can send registered, return receipt to APO/FPO or bases, if they would accept that as proof of delivery and go after the service if it gets lost from there. I understand your concerns sir, but OTOH how do you think a service member who is out serving our nation feels when told by an American they cannot be bothered to service military members. I will tell you how, makes us feel like the rest of America has forgotten about us. When I was in the Gulf war, I had some companies willing to send me items, others were not. To this day I remember whom were whom. I go out of my way to patronize those firms.
Fair enough, I apologize, I misread your comments as well. Its hard because believe it or not our service members are told exactly what you said in your post sir.
If you would have responded "yes," he would have asked you if he could mail you a $5,000 check to cover the $50 piece he won on ebay, and you could simply mail him back a money order of $4,950 along with the coin.
Agree. While I support our military 100%, no one is entitled to anything no matter who you are. It is his job and he chose to pick that profession and business is business like in the OP's current position.
I have traded back and forth with people in the sandboxes and have had no problems. Heck, I have whole typesets of the POGS and Afghan and Iraqi coins and paper money.
Why is she looking at me like that Scot? Did I do something wrong? Urban Fellow, take it with a grain. One of the reasons why UPS won't ship to an APO/FPO is that the package is not traceable. Make no apologies for covering your hinney.
I am still very new at selling and shipping coins to buyers. I just ran into this same situation with someone who wanted to purchase some silver from me and send it to an APO. I explained that I was not comfortable doing this, and I would check into it before committing to a deal. I got a somewhat nasty PM back about how it was the same as shipping to a regular address and I was wasting his time, but after I looked into it more, the package gets delivered to the APO, but after that it is untraceable. As a seller or a buyer, I want shipments to be 100% traced. It is your choice, stand by it!!
Not making lite of anything, but this soldier has a rude awakening if he maintains that sense of entitlement. I salute each of them, some with more conviction than others.
Yup, I worked with plenty in my last job that I'd consider very horrible people. A uniform doesn't make you a good person, you and you alone are what make you a good person or not. To the OP, you made the right decision. Don't let foolish people like the potential buyer guilt you of your decisions.
Many Branches Have "Rotten Apples" I believe all of us ex-servicemen agree with your observation, but know that our buddies with proper intentions and "good hearts" far outweighed the few with "an attitude". SEMPER FI!! :thumb:
The ONLY possible problem with shipping to an address which is "other" than whats specified by PayPal, military or not, is that is opens the door for "item not received" disputes within PayPal. The BEST method is to have the APO recipient have one of his stateside family members purchase the item and then forward it to him.
I can say I have experienced this in depth. Some sellers, retailers etc do not want to ship to APO box. I had a seller here drag out a sell for over a week and a half then once he saw my zip code he refused to do it. I will end speculation now. Yes it is traceable. How do you think they insure packages? It is really frustrating when you are trying to get things shipped in and they refuse to do it based off of ignorance. If the seller doesn't want to do a customs form or something then so be it. That is their choice. I used to use a APO forwarding service. Because of the amount of companies etc that will not ship because they just dont know any better. You get a regular address, the seller doesn't realize it but its literally right across the street from the APO port. They accept your package, sign for it etc. Then readdress it to your APO box and ship it off Bad thing is it cost double postage essentially. And I am too old for that now, i refuse to use sellers/companies that wont ship to APO address.
my reasons for not wanting to ship to an APO/FPO was stated in my original post. i have had too many items go missing or end up damaged by the time they reach their destination. so i prefer not to have to deal with it anymore. if this person would have just responded back that they understand i would have been more than happy to explain other methods for me to ship coins to him. the fact that he insulted me by saying that i don't support american troops is what ****ed me off. i have nothing but respect for the men and women that have served and still serve for this country. plain and simple
That was my stance on it, and you are 100% right. They do understand, but refuse to see your side, and try to tell you it is "ok" or " It will be fine" when in fact, it is not the case... Ship it to a family member and if it is "fine" or "no problem", then the family member will have nothing to worry about... FYI>>>>There are also some customs forms that are required in some cases...
The issue has nothing to do with supporting the troops...It has to do with a fact that you are not comfortable with it, and a lot more feel the same way..
