Hello, I figured I would bust this out and take a couple of scans and see what you all think. I've been looking at pictures and reading and from what I gather with my very very very limited knowledge I think this may be in the F15 range. I do have a question about the edge around the top of her head. Can anyone tell me what that extra scalloping is? It looks almost like reeding but I dunno. I've been reading a lot about fakes recently (the 1899-CC thread has been interesting...) and I'm hoping that mine isn't. Ya'll have got me paranoid! I welcome any input you guys have since you have been pretty spot on. Thanks for looking!
Here is a place for PCGS photo grade online. http://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Morgan/Grades Your coin has way to much detail left to be a F15, I put is closer to AU50. Don't let the color throw you off, worry about the detail to start.
Ditto! The marks along the rim could have been from the denticles of another Morgan hitting it, but I'm not positive. Chris
I was looking at the pcgs grading site I just thought that it needed a bit more color. I guess I've been grading most of my stuff pretty low then. Nothing like aiming low and being mildly surprised when things turn out better. Oh and when I saw 45 I immediately thought of this: Thank you!
Just my opinion, it has more hair and wing detail than a 35. Not like that grade difference would change the value of this coin, but to me it has very good hair detail above the ear.
I think you might be right. Bottom grade would be a 35, and probable high would be a 45. I would be happy grading that as EF-45. Not clean enough for any AU grade IMHO.
Looking at the PCGS site I'm having a hard time really seeing a big difference between 35 and 45. Mine has some scratches on the face is that the big detractor? I think her hair has pretty good details. Would the rim where reeding of the other coin hit it affect it a lot?
Oh that is quite ok. It probably isn't a 35, but a grade higher is likely. There is a lot of surface noise, more than wear--scratches on the obverse, and nicks on the reverse. Cumulatively, I would agree with my colleague "Vette" that a 45 is most likely. This is a very typical, common date Morgan look.
Woah.. AU60, I've never seen one of those. No, I'm just messing around. Me personal opinion on the OPs coin would be XF40.
Morgandude - that one looks fake too. I think you should give it to me. I wouldn't want you carrying around a counterfeit. Being the nice guy that I am, I will take it off your hands. For your sake of course... BTW - thanks everyone for your opinions. I've learned quite a bit tonight.
