any opinions? should i even bother with SBA at all or just add a page to the back of Ike thanks walter
How thorough you want to be? Want the proofs in there or just the business strikes? Any varieties or just one per each bus. strike date and mintmark? If you're just doing the bus. strikes one page ought to be plenty: 1979 P, D, S 1980 P, D, S 1981 P, D, S (None released for circulation; only showed up in mint sets.) 1999 P, D (San Francisco didn't mint any SBAs this year). OK maybe two pages. Want just the proofs? 1979-1981 S, 1999 P (the reason there's any '99 SBAs is because vending machine companies knew they were putting out a new dollar in 2000 and wanted a coin of the same weight and diameter to calibrate their machines to recognize them. The Sacajawea design hasn't been finalized yet, so they minted the most recent design they had, the SBA. Authorization to mint them came too late for San Francisco to put them in 1999 proof sets, so Philadelphia minted them instead and sold them as a separate product. Worth about $20 or so these days. As I understand it the reason there's any 1921 Morgan dollars is for a similar reason, casino owners knew they were bringing the silver dollar back and needed fresh ones to calibrate their machines, and the Peace dollar design wasn't ready yet. Or so I understand; if this is just an urban legend feel free to correct me lol...). If you're going to be thorough and add the proofs and a few major varieties, maybe you want the SBA album. Some combine it with the Sacajaweas too. SBA/Sac./president dollars go 9 to a page in Danscos and most other major albums. (Personally I think they could easily fit 12 to a page but then they couldn't sell you as many pages lol...) At any rate the SBA dollar is a very short series; the only one shorter is the 20 cent piece (only made circulation pieces 2 years!). If you're not going to be especially thorough a page or two is OK I guess. If you're a major completionist go for a full album if you want. This is a very overlooked series.
I was just going to add SBA to the back of the IKEs but I found a SBA Dansco with a bunch of coins in it for cheap on ebay. So, I just ended up adding the Sacajawea/Native American dollars to the back of the SBA album.
update: I opted for the SBA page for the back of the 8176 I have used SBA's from mint sets leaving one blank spot. I just put a 79 proof in there as an example since i had a duplicate.
Regarding the 1921 Morgans, that would be an urban legend. The 21 Morgan was brought out since the US oversold their silver dollar stockpile and needed silver dollars to back paper currency. They simply started making Morgans again until a new design could be finalized. It wasn't finalized and put into production until Dec 1921, and the new high relief caused issues. So, the Peace dollar relief was lowered for 1922. Anyway, I have never heard one iota about casinos. Silver dollars did not start being used really heavily in casinos until the 1950's in Vegas.
The run was so short, it just makes more sense to add a page to the 8176. Having an album with one page in it seems sorta goofy.
