I have no objection to premiums on toned coins, but I wouldn't bid on that one, simply because the pics are too small. I prefer copious pixels.

I feel like toned coins are similar to art. They can go for ridiculous prices and the average person will have no clue why...(including me)

Nice coin, but I would not have went that high.

This is the kind of toning that would look better on a larger coin.

Yes, lgl is short for lonegunlawyer.

And what I meant by "missed this one" was I did not guess it to be a Detecto thread by the thread title before opening it.

There you go Tim. Looks like it was a nice coin to go after in a few ways.

Despite all that, the guides say $85...

I have yet to pay a guide price for a coin. Any guide.

I am not aware of a single guide that comes close to being accurate on seated liberty types, and that includes the grey sheet. That said, the numbers that are in the "guides" represent the most common type or variety for the year given, a specialist or two will easily pay more for scarcer varieties.

You should know this Tim, you have been on this forum for a while.

I cannot add much more to the 2 prior posts except I agree whole heartedly. Price guides are only guides. Guides just make a dark room dim.

Hence the reason you will only have an average collection.
