    Perth Mint "Mystical Creatures" series

    Hello-

Catching up on some blog reading I see the Perth Mint is issuing a new series titled "Mythical Creatures". It is a 5-coin series, 1 oz proof silver, beginning with the Griffin.

This is the reverse from the Perth Mint website.

Although pricey, they look pretty fantastic! (Pun intended). I've never owned or thought about owning a colorized coin before. Just wondering if anyone else thinks this first issue looks creative and fun?

It certainly looks creative and fun! But I too am not a colorized coin guy so I will not be purchasing any of these.

Creative, fun, cool looking, yep I think so. Whether I think I'll add one at the $100+ price tag, not sure.

I did just grab a couple of the Lunar series red dragon designs, 1oz shipped for under $60. I might wait on these and see if they end up with a similar price reduction when they hit the outside as that price is much more desirable to me.

I love this, call me a nerd but i think its awesome especially with the greek key or whatever the pattern is. I may buy one for a friend of mine that plays World of Warcraft (alliance) too. Do they have anywhere that sells them cheaper?

There are some on ebay, but the auction ones are already getting bid up close or over the direct price, and the BIN's are well over, lowest I saw was $119.

I just ordered one from the mint. Since i have a stateside address i qualified for free shipping via fedex. It was 109usd. Then paypal said the site was down so i didnt pay for it, i wonder whats going to happen now? I am sort of sad to see that the next coin in the series is a unicorn.

Love it love it love it. But I also loved the purple dragon I bought last year from Perth for a hundred bucks and now I look at it and mourn my other seventy bucks contained in the premium. I'm holding back, but it's so cool I might bet again (and have buyer's remorse again).

I had to email them over the paypal issue i had, and he replied back and mentioned that the unicorn will not be "my little pony-ish" So i decided not to cancel my order.

I so want one of the purple dragons (actually I want the whole series, I think they look awesome), but maybe next month.

This is one I consider worth the money from an enjoyment perspective, not only the silver value.

Thanks everyone for all your comments.

I am sort of hoping the 5th coin in this series is a Balrog of Morgoth... Surprisingly, both "Balrog" and "Morgoth" both have search hits here at Cointalk.com.

Anyway, I appreciate all the comments and discussion on the "Mythical Creatures" coin series.

I really wish they would do a plain proof set of these in addition to the colorized. I really do like the designs, just not the color.

The coin does look good, and been a fan of mythical creatures I really like it. But, I tend to stay away from Perth mint coins. The price they charge is a bit too much for the silver content.

Ditto. Colorized does little for me and looks too cheesy for me, but they have made some really cool colorized coins. I just wish they weren't colorized.

personally i cannot abide NCLT, they are just aimed at making money with no real numismatic interest for the serious collector..............

Australia has so many real strange creatures, why make some up?

This is true. I've also heard that their mintage numbers are higher than they claim on some issues. They remind me of RCM in a lot of ways. Still, when you want some interesting designs, those are the mints cranking them out.
