MintNewsBlog reports that the mint has sold out of the 2012 Silver Proof Set with a mintage of just 393,757 sets. Seeing that the 1995 Silver Set came in at 549,878, and the 1999-S came in at 804,565....this makes an all time record low mintage for modern silver proof sets. My wonder is, how these low numbers will play out in the short and long term...especially knowing that the 'rare' 1999-S silver set traded in the hundreds of dollars for a while, and still commands prices of around $100. Will be interesting to see! Glad I have one for me and my baby boy! PS- Happy Collecting in the New Year!
Well gosh! Given the fact that the 1999 Silver Proof Sets had a mintage more than double this number (804,565) and they were selling as high as $500 each, can we expect the same for 2012?? (Hint: Some might think so.)
The 2012 Limited Edition silver proof sets are still for sale and have a mintage maximum of 50,000 units. Additionally, the five-piece silver quarter sets are also for sale and have no mintage maximium.
True, but the price on the LE set will constrain how many coins are added to the total mintage of the entire set of coins. And don't mistake me as preaching the gospel to buy up these sets to flip...I've got my two sets and that it. I only see any increase in value as icing on the cake.
I've got one coming from the mint now. I wonder what it will be worth. Makes me think about getting a few more from the local shop.
I think that there will be an immediate bounce for these sets. They will likely increase as much as 100% in the next two weeks, but that's purely a guess on my part.
No wonder the mint didn't want to fix my set I got for Xmas from my brother - the Lens on the penny, dime, nickel (etc) coin set has a crack in it and they wouldn't exchange it....
Public service announcement from TopcatCoin: These are still available for less than mint issue price and free shipping! Just follow the link below. Let's see if we can sell them out tonight. http://www.moderncoinmart.com/store/product.php?productid=25945&cat=248&page=2 Have fun! TC
The key coins in a Silver Proof Set are the dime and half. The qtrs, nickels and cent can be obtained through other means from the mint but the dime and half, up till now, were only available in the Silver Proof Set. It's important to remember that in addition to the dimes and halves contained in the 2012 Silver Proof Sets, there also will be 50,000 silver dimes and 50,000 silver halves produced as part of the "Limited Edition Silver Proof Set". So add 50,000 to the number of regular issue Silver Proof Sets (393,757) and you have 443,757 silver halves and dimes. The mint probably had to produce a small amount of the 2012 Silver Proof Sets in order to bait customers into buying the "Limited Edition Silver Proof Set" at a overly inflated price.
So where would that leave the final mintage on the One Cent? The only other way the mint sold these were in the birth year set to my knowledge. Are there other means of getting the S mint proof Lincolns?
So Mikenoodle, you're a veteran of numismatics and a respected member of this forum, I'm curious as to what your feelings are, in regards to this sold out 2012 Silver Proof Set thing. Myself, I can't help but feel it's another sales gimmick by the mint. Deception is another word that comes to mind. I just feel it's going to be another mint generated feeding frency that will be short lived leaving alot of people disappointed. Maybe I'm just bitter today. I don't know.
Roger that, sorry, I had a brain fart, my grey hairs are turning blond. Should still cut the numbers down a bit from the previous years though.
You're making me blush... LOL I think that this has little to do with manipulating the market for these sets and more to do with the potential that silver could have gone through the roof early this year and created havoc some other way. IMHO the Mint has stopped selling them to avoid a run on Mint silver products or having to change the prices of these sets should some large scale price rise in silver come about. As far as long term value, that has less to do with the Mint and more to do with people's perception about how scarce they will be in the marketplace. I agree with what Lee (lyds19) said that because the numbers on this set will be comparable to the 1999 sets, buyers will drive the prices up likely beyond what their actual value is and those who buy at substantial premiums will lose just like they did with the 1999 Silver Proof Sets when prices come back to earth
Prophets? You mean profits, right? No, methinks you mean prophets.........LOL Marvelous play on words.
Deception in what way? The 2012 Silver Proof Sets have been on sale since May of 2012. Lack luster sales were directly attributed to the price of $67.95 each which everybody and hid brother hiccupped on!
