    lowest mintage yet http://mintnewsblog.com/2013/01/2012-silver-proof-set-sold-out/
"Based on the latest US Mint sales report released today, sales had reached just 393,757 units. This represents the lowest sales level for the product since the modern annual Silver Proof Set was introduced in 1992. Unlike some of the other new lows recently seen, this establishes a new low by a considerable margin. The previous low mintage for the annual set was for the 1995 Silver Proof Set at 549,878." this my friends is BIG

Problem is that you are "trying to catch a falling knife" in wall street parlance. Would it be worth it to take a flier on one or two? Maybe. But to anyone who thinks this HAS to be an all time low for these sets forever have forgotten the recent past. If silver keeps rising I could see the annual mintage of these under 200k annually. Therefor, paying any huge premium for these today would evaporate.

Just a word of caution. I remember in the early 80's people talking about "ultra low mintages in proof sets". Look where those premiums are today.

What is the old rule of thumb? Wait 10 years before buying any US mint product? I would say it saves you money most of the time.

Gentlemen this is one of those sure things that pops up about once per year- jump on it

  10. Chris: You may be right. However, these sold at the mint for 67.95 + 4.95 shipping = 72.90. You can buy them right now at the MCM link I provided above for $64.95 out the door. Not too shabby. ;) TC

You guys very well could be VERY right short term. I am just thinking long term and the way mintages are going, I am saying this mintage may very well look fairly high in 5-10 years. That is the "falling knife" I am warning about. Most modern mintages in general have been declining, and I see no reason for them not to continue. THe group of collectors who ordered one of these every year forming the base of the mint's business are simply becoming overwhelmed. The prices to buy everything from the mint each year is simply becoming too large. Long term I simply believe this will lead to declining mintages.

Just my opinion/warning. Not saying I am right, especially short term. This may be the lowest mintage for a few years at least.

Personally, I cut back from 10 sets...................to three due to the price AND the fluctuating price of silver. It took me 2 years to recoup my costs, yes costs, on the 5 coin 2010 ATB Silver Proof sets I had purchased at $32.95 from the US Mint. This was before the price on those sets from the mint went up even higher.

IMO, the era of the 1999 Silver Proof Sets and the prices they brought in the short term are long gone and speculation on these sets is a fools game.

  13. I am not a speculator. I only posted a link to a sold out set that was currently available at under mint issue cost with free shipping. It looks like they sold out in less than an hour, so I hope my friends at CT got in on one if they wanted. I do not care if there are lower silver mint set mintages in the future due to increasing silver prices. Following this logic, these sets will then also appreciate with the spot price of silver regardless of mintage. IMO, investing in coins in general is a "fools game" whether that be high grade Ikes, ancients, or modern mint products. I simply collect what I enjoy. :smile TC

That Modern Coin Mart price has me curious. Do large dealers get to buy at wholesale prices from the mint? Or get a discount for buying sets in bulk?

Or did they pay full price but bought them earlier in the year when silver was down, so their "below mint" price is still a small profit for them?

Picked up one last night--they are going like hot cakes after the mint reports. Was searching ebay and two of them sold while I was looking. Got one for a decent price.

I would also add to what Chris said that I believe the Mint's customer basis is declining in general due to the fact they have, for at least the past three years, been irritating and alienating their customers.

In 2010, we had the ATB puck fiasco. In 2011, there was the underproduction of the 5-ASE set. Last year, we saw the widely-unanticipated re-release of the S-Proof Silver ASE.

It's just my opinion, but I think many people are tired of the Mint's continued buffoonery and lack of creativity. I believe many customers have just said, "Enough is enough" and have just walked away.

As Chris said, if a person is looking to flip these, there may be some short-term value, but holding them for the longer term may not be so wise, as it is very likely we will see sales continue to decline as the customer base continues to erode, thereby making this particular set not the lowest mintage.

We have been promised an upgraded online ordering system for 2013 which will handle more volume. If things continue, by the time the system is up and running, it may be determined it is not necessary.

Realized recently that I had not bought the 2012 set, so I ordered two and also got two of the 5 oz hockey pucks. Free shipping since it went over some level.
