What coin is this roman denarius?

It will come. Like I said, read Doug website articles, read anything you can, buy a few good books and go over them. It is weird how if you are interested in something you can absorb knowledge. There are untold numbers of coins I don't know I recognize but when I see them I do just from random readings on ancients. Also, the more you see authentic ancients, the more the fakes will stick out. Subconsciously your mind picks up the traits of authentic coins, and when one does not look like that, it immediately triggers a red alert. Best way I can describe it.

You just started, but are starting to see how it works sir. Just keep at it and you will be an "old hand" at these soon enough. I still remember when Mat was starting on ancients, and look at him now. :)

P.S. "Sell on Ebay". I don't think Swervo realizes how much a hoarder I really am, huh? :) Those few late romans I sold here were abberations, I kept 100 from the lot, sold maybe 80, but have over 300 left. I am sure one day they will just get "absorbed" into the pile that is my "collection".

P.P.S. Yes Mat, I have not forgot. Just busy, sorry.

Many in the collecting hobbies will not understand but there are some of us for whom the coins are the goal rather than the cash value they represent. In 2012 I sold or traded away eight coins. Four went in one deal and four were singles including a rather nice left facing Gallienus I really miss but had to let go to get something I wanted more. By Medoraman standards, I might be considered a revolving door compared to his 'black hole' collection (once inside they are never again seen). Nearly half of the people who have coins that bought/traded with me since the mid 1970's post on this site. Back then, I sold off most of my collection and regret that act to this day. One might say I tend to overcompensate. I have coins that mean little to me but never make the effort to dispose of them. This is the difference between being a collector and a mini-dealer.

Almost every time I hear of someone selling off part or all of their collection, the issue is one of regret. Part of it is I know what I can buy today probably will not be as available tomorrow, and I simply do not wish to "regret" selling off parts today in the future.

Seriously, what we could buy 10 years ago is in many cases not purchasable for reasonable amounts today for the most part. I bet the same will be said 10 years from now. So, I buy what I can today, even if its not a particular collecting interest today, so as to make sure I can have them when they become a collecting interest.

A case in point was a group of arab byzantine I bought about 7 years ago. I still am not really "in" to them, but when I am I have about 60 of them to study. :D
