Any ideas as to why the lower denomination regal coins seldom come up for sale and when they do are F at very best ?
My guess is that not a lot of them appealed to collectors outside of India. I like the Kutch, Jodhpur and Hyderabad coins myself and would like to find a nice coin from Porbandar sometime. I don't find many of them even at coin shows and have had to rely on dealers or collectors in India to obtain them for me. I really like the Hyderabad paper money, but have never bought one because they can scarcely be found outside of India, and the prices make it prohibitive to legally send out of the country - India has fairly strict laws on sending currency out of the country.
aye, thats what i have to do rely on indian dealers/sellers i have a few of 1/2 paisa and 1/12 anna in VG which is good enough for me for now due to the scarcity and the price when they come up, i just cant believe the rupee comes up regularly but not the smaller change :S
The smaller change coins can be some of the most fascinating, machine struck square coins etc. Bahalwalpur coins come to mind as one with odd shapes.
yeah i guess the funky shapes are cool, but the smaller ones bearing victoria arent all that much different to the rest of indias coins ha ! never mind im going down for the london coin show in feb so hopefully illl find something there !
I realised that my bikanir state 1/2 pice only had a mintage of 500,000 so I guess they are usually in lower grades due to the usage they would have had !
I am not so sure about later pieces, but I buy ancient india pieces. The coppers and small silvers were the workhorses of the economy, and tended to get much more worn than other, larger denominations. I have had luck buying group lots of pieces direct from India or central Asia on Ebay at times. One seller used to sell nice lots of Kushan and others I always bid on. I find buying groups helps alleviate the postage costs per coin. Right now I am waiting on 11 Kushanshah coins being shipped from Pakistan.
I think you make sense like.. Almost all of the 1/4 Anna down are in poor grade but rupee is readily available in a better grade and the price difference for a VF+ rupee is not all that different to a VF 1/4 Anna Infact I am watching a dewas state 1/4 Anna for £40 ! I won't be bidding on it I just want too see if anyone does haha
Well double team Him you message him tell him its not even worth £5 then I will swoop in with a £7 posted bid and get it ha !
