i get nervous if i have only 1000 in the back of my wallet, but i have money in 2 banks and 20 safes full in my house vault of mostly my coin collection.in those safes i have coins that are by book value worth well over 10k.i don't like to state this though so i hope this helps.by the why i also have a gun collection handy too.
$500 I have no problem paying , between $500-1000 is a large buy for me , over $1000 only happened once . But money has been tight lately so my purchases are way down and I'm comfortable below $400 .
Anything over $500 is usually a "major" purchase for me...requiring at least a couple days thought. I'd say $500 to $1000 is an occasional purchase, maybe once every 4-6 months. > $1000 is less common at this point, maybe once every 1.5 years. The majority of my coins fall in the $50 to $200 range.
It sounds like we all dabble in about the same range on coins. I usually spend anywhere from $10 on a coin to $100 per coin, depending. The wallet notices a nice $100 coin though. I dont think $500-$700 is out of range though, just depends on the coin, if i need it to finish a set, then no problem paying bigger bucks, but if its just to buy cause i like it, then i stay under $100. Built a nice collection so far that-a-way
Ha ha, glad you took notice, but after a *ahem* unfortunate incident, I no longer take pride in my signature. To answer your question, it depends on how much money I have. I generally think that (If i have 50 dollars) That anything over 15 bucks is going to cause a trip to the gas station so they can roll the lumps out of my wallet.
It would depend on the coin, and the pocket book at/of the time. Sometimes, the want rules out, and you adjust the funds to acquire the coin. This is life, at the moment.:smile
Being in college, my wallet noticed $5. The past few years I've probably averaged out 20 bucks a month with a few $50 purchases and some months where I bought nothing.
More like 'sleeping out' 'round these parts.......the dreaded dog house. I try to make my high end purchases work by selling off stuff that the collection doesn't need anymore. I tell the wife all the time, "where can you find a hobby that helps pay for itself"? That usually keeps me indoors.......
expensive is different for different things, for an 1856 flying eagle cent in a strong vf 6500 is not too bad, but for an ag 16d merc 6500 is way too expensive. Beware of great deals. Yeah I got a bunch of circ Morgans I will sell for 18 each. Really? Unless you really really know me and like me, I am not buying it.
It all depends for me. For the most part what I buy usually falls into the $100-$400 range, not out of necessity so much as thats just where things I tend to like are priced. I've never really considered where the line might be drawn for something I really liked and the opportunity to buy was there. Though the wife starts to get the look when I go over a few thousand, unless its something for her. Guy
Given my long career in professional purchasing, any coin above the relative market price would be expensive. I always do my best to obtain my coins for the lowest price and the highest quality.
For me, the term expensive is always changing. Sometimes I save a few weeks salary and go looking for a higher priced item. Sometimes I blow my check on other things like movies, clothes, video games and other stuff.
The OP's intent was at what price do you start to feel a pinch purchasing a coin. If that point is where you could not turn around and immediately sell it for more, then I think you are at the wrong site.
