Yes, the expression originates from the sig line of a PCGS forum member (Askari) and originally it was "The Dark Side". ...and i'm almost certain its not a Star Wars reference and that expression came from Pink Floyd's "Brain Damage/The Dark Side of the moon". Jose
Christian is right, its an American thing. Its really us US collectors who dare collect anything other than US coins embracing and turning around the stereotype and prejudice. The US has SUCH a strong US only mentality that for a long time non-US collectors were thought of as somewhat "off" here. I was that way for over a decade, it just never really occurred to me to collect anything other than US coins. Then I found the joys of ancients, and that same US only mentality now seems really strange to me. So, its really us Non-US collecting American collectors who use the phrase as a joke. Chris
I would of thought Canadian coin collectors would have been called "Backsiders" and UK collectors "Drunkciders".
the dark side for me is anything to do with manchester united football club, they must be destroyed at all costs...........
now now joe, we all drink real beer in the northern counties of the uk not cider, that's for souther softies
For a while, whenever anybody came up with this oh-so-funny Dark Side thing, I would say that, coin wise, there is the Dark Side and the Dull Side. But fortunately many (most?) US collectors do not use it any more ... Christian
I would say that 99.9% of people used it with a Star Wars reference in mind. Over the years there were constant phrases posted like - you cannot resist the power of the dark side; Luke, use the force Luke, you can resist the dark side Luke ! I used to do it myself, ALL the time. And if you go back far enough on the forums you'll even find posts where I used to use another quote when I or somebody else was able to convince a US collector to also start collecting world coinage because of all the pictures of fabulous coins that we would post - an example of "the power of the dark side" !. That quote was - And another one down, another one down, another one bites the dust ! It was done in fun of course, and we used to have a grand old time doing it !
Shouldn't Lords be capitalized, as a title? And ALL of us are in danger from Light Sabres! I would gladly sacrifice the last joint on me left pinkie to one of 'em...just to witness the technology. With any luck my wee wound'll be seared smokey inna process. May th' Force be with y'All!
Is there ANYthing this fellow doesn't have a handle on? C'mon: Let's hear from those of you who have stumped him, or otherwise found his deep counsel lacking. Anyone?
I was going to say that if you were as old as him then you'd have a pretty good handle on things too. Then I looked, you are almost the same age as him ! Suffice it to say that Roy has been around (the coins forums) for a long time and he has a great memory. He also knows coins, among a lot of other things
Ah. Duzzat mean he's younger? Jest a WhipperSnapper? It seems to suggest, though, that he was born sometime inna Thirties. Perhaps that's privileged information, accessible only to administrators an' such high mucky mucks...just askin', is all. Doesn't matter to me if he's real old...to a point.
