...how would you go about it? I noticed that some of you have had coins in Dansco albums for many years. Are some albums better than others for long-term toning potential? Are some of the older, reactive paper envelopes still available? The reason I ask is that I've been going through a lot of mint sets for my collection, and rather than sell off the discards, I'd like to store them in such a way that in perhaps 10 or 20 years they'd take on some attractive NATURAL toning.
Some may argue that the intent to tone a coin is the definition of Artificial toning. I will say that attractive toning is not always the result of people storing coins improperly. Many coins tone and never get the attractive colors that you are looking for. Some get down right ugly. So I would not recommend storing your coins in any way that could actually do them harm. Put them in an album, enjoy them, and if in 10 or 20 years they have attractive toning, consider yourself lucky. Unless of course toning is no longer considered a good thing.
Put em in a Dansco, take out the acetate slides to promote air flow, and check on them once per year.
A moist/humid environment may also speed up the toning process, but be careful - it could also result in environmental damage or corrosion. But I don't endorse doing this. I ditto what Jay said.
I know it's a roll of the dice - I've noticed that some of those old Wayte Raymond albums turned out some pretty mixed results. But I'm not interested in profiting from it. Heck, I'll be lucky to still be alive in 20 years, and I have no interest at all in dealing coins. I just don't feel like fussing around with selling my discards on eBay. I'm more interested in the project as a science experiment.
i have a dansco album with a set of the state silver quarters. they all have a little brown or goldish tone appearing on the high points of the designs. i did have the slides in though
Thank you sir! Which reminds me, I need to find a dry place for my A-list collection. It gets pretty humid around here come summertime. I figure if I keep them in a room that's air-conditioned around the clock, it should be ok, right?
hush! Eat your wheaties, finish your crosswords, and remember, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. :thumb:
You could put them in cardboard holders like Paul said , but if you just want it to retone or darken a little evenly you can put them in an envelope or wrap them in a napkin , but check them regularly because there's no way to tell if they will be splotchy and ugly .
oh gosh, are those still on the internet? keep it on the down-low, ok? But thanks! I really should make a new one, huh?...
I haven't gotten through them all yet, but it's way WAY better than what passes for entertainment on the idiot box. Keep it coming!
Paul had a good suggestion, and if you want to experiment a little more for comparison, you might try the 2x2 Kraft envelopes for some of the coins. Try some coppers, some clads and maybe some silver both ways to see what happens. Chris
Yeah this is a tough call. Can't say i've ever tried to purposly NT a coin. However I do have a 2001 ASE that started to tone in the holder it was in (nice dark blue edged rainbow) I was a tough call what to do when I found it in this state. I did however decide that i really liked the way it was toning so left it "as was" and hope it developes fully... Not the best pics but these show the colors off best out of the 20 or so i took lol
Sorry, but that coin will soon be, if not now, corroded. Black is the terminal color, and once it turns from glossy black to matte black, its corroded. If you wish to keep that coin, STOP tarnishing now, either by putting in a place it cannot tarnish or dipping it. The real key to nice toning is fresh metal and a little sulphur and some humidity. Put "fresh" coins in manila envelopes, leave them in a drawer for a few years, and something should happen. Its not like it used to be, though, since everyone has air conditioners now and they REALLY slow down toning IMHO.
Appeaciate the concern but it is not "black" as yet that is the regretably the quality of the picture and me trying to show off the colors as best as possible. 2nd it is only an ASE/bullion and not a coin I have any real concern about which is why i decided to leave it in the holder it's in to continue (call it an experiment in NTing lol)
Uhhhhh, no, not really. What you need is a closed/sealed container of some kind like a safe or a large Tupperware container, and you keep them inside that. And, you put a rechargeable silica gel pack inside that container as well. And change/recharge it as needed. And if you want the best protection you can get, you don't use albums at all.
