I know of a coin dealer online that has quite a few raw bust halves for sale for a decent amount of money. Although I'm so-so at telling things, I would like a second set of eyes before I make a purchase. If someone here has a keen sense of telling me if a coin is problem free (dealer has great photos), I would appreciate it if they could respond through PM.
I think 2,5 and 7 would slab problem free, the others are either cleaned, scratched or damaged. I am not a Bust half expert and furthermore not mentor material.
Unless you're doing for your own enjoyment, you're wasting your time slabbing CBH's. Most collectors of this series don't want them slabbed and thus won't pay anything more than a raw coin for a slabbed piece. Guy
Doing it for my own enjoyment, not for profit. I want o get about 4-5 bust halves over the course of this winter and send them into PCGS.
If you want the coins slabbed, why don't you just buy coins that are already slabbed? If you want to increase your skills and learn how to submit problem free coins, I don't see how asking someone with more knowledge to help avoid all of the problem coins helps you.
It's kind of like pawn starts. The guy knows a little bit, but calls in an "expert" to make sure it's ok to buy. I don't wanna plunk down $125 on a bust half and come to find out I suck, that's what a 2nd opinion is for.
Well, I wish I knew someone personally who was great with coins that could teach me what they know...until we meet guess its books, likely the ANA correspondence course, and Coin Talk!
I think most of those don't have a chance. Why don't you tell us which ones you think would slab? Then we can help you see the issues.
Here are some of my thoughts, this is not my series at all, never owned one. 1. no real opinion. 2. cleaned and retuned. 3. scratched 4. whizzed or wiped or cleaned. 5. scratched. 6. I don't know, uneven wear, dings, scratches. 7. may have had an old cleaning with market acceptable toning now. Not sure what the marks on the breast are. 8. harshly cleaned
An enormous amount of the interpretation on these pieces will depend upon the imaging style used by TECC. Since I do not know the lighting used, it would be more difficult to give an informed opinion. As is, number three is the only one that truly scares me. Remember, folks, that the major TPGs (PCGS and NGC) don't require an original coin for certification, they merely require a coin that is on the market acceptable side of surface manipulation or originality.
