I bought this coin a while back and haven't looked at it in a while, how would you guys grade this? i know its FS, but i'm stuck between MS66 or MS67. let me know what you guys think.
The mark above the dome in the left field concerns me for an MS67 grade but I still think it has a shot as long as the photos are not hiding anything. I say it is a solid MS66 FS from PCGS and has a better shot at MS67 6FS from NGC. Nice type coin!
Ill throw a MS65FS into the ring. I think the the large dark rub on his collar, all the spots under liberty and on his forehead will keep it at 65. Also, what's that going on between the words Monticello and Five cents? Fingerprint?
That is a nice piece, but I think that there are a few too many contact marks to go higher than MS-65.
While I will agree that the coin that the OP poted is nicer than the 65 above, the contact mark on the prime focal area of the cheek and the hit above monticello hold it to a 65 for me.
IMO it's a minimum MS66 and a minimum 5FS. Yes the contact mark is a bit large but it's not like it's in the blank field over Monticello it's close enough to the roof line (yea closer to the edge would have been a bit better) to blend into the building without being a eye catching focal point. As long as it's not damage it should be fine. There is no question the strike is almost as full as they come especially with regard to the rotunda and triangle porch roof. It's not like it's a 1989 to present where TPG's require everything about the coin to be almost perfect. It's pre 1975 and old mint technology and the PCGS' and NGC's of the world know that. A 67 might be stretching it simply because based just on the pics the third and all important pillar is a touch weak at the top and even the fourth pillar has flatness from the strike. Another thing to point out is the three or so tick marks between the first and second pillars. It's hard to tell from the pics if they disrupt the 6th step. If they do it will get a 5FS the only forgiveness you get from TPG's is the third pillar and the steps under it. So the bottom line is what grader you get, at which company and what kind of mood he or she is in that day will determine 66 or 67 and 5 or 6 FS.
looks like a RPM to me. Die fatigue is very evident. The far left of the steps would need in-hand examination 67 is pushing it IMHO, I'd say 66, don't really know about the steps.
Greg, Do me a favor and compare the elements of grading between the coin you just posted and the OP's.
I would post an MS65 1940-D but I don't own one. The point is that the surfaces of the OP's coin are consistent with those of a premium gem coin. The rub you referred to appears to be nothing more than photo contrast and the spotting is way too minor to affect the grade of the coin. I find the spotting on the OP's coin as about as distracting as the spotting on this coin.
Here is the first PCGS MS65 that I found on Heritage I see far more marks, less luster, and a much mushier strike.
