    Hey everyone

I have been looking through eBay for some colonial coins and notice a lot of 8 reales coins that date to the late 1700s from the cazador shipwreck. Are these coins worth purchasing? I've seen them range from $50-$300 depending on the quality. Any advice on purchasing these coins is much appreciated.

    Thanks Larry

Last year I purchased 2 Cazador's NGC Genuine for $75 each. Did you know that the pillars of Hercules with the banner is what later turned into the "$" symbol? - Some say that if that ship didn't sink, America could look a lot different than it does today.

I got hooked watching the Home Shopping coin show. I sat there and took in an hour of brainwashing. They were selling theirs for $200 each back then. I like good deals so I kept looking around until I found these. They all look bad because they were at the bottom of the sea for 200 years, mine are a little worse than others.

That's awesome LP! I studied archeology in college and have a degree in it. I hope you are recording all your finds! Information is more valuable than the find itself. If you need help documenting your finds I can help get you some forms but it will be a bit more difficult to document exact locations. For that you need expensive gps equipment. Be careful with legality issues you could be treading on dangerous/illegal stuff. You could probably coax local universities into digging there if you show some of what you found. They would even provide equipment. Either way I'd love to know more. Message me in private.

In regard to buying actual 8 reales coins should I be worried if the coin looks super clean and good condition ?

That depends on who you are buying them from. If it is a known and trusted dealer, or individual, then you should have no worries. If it is not, I would steer clear.

That is a commonly held theory, but a theory I believe to be incorrect. This is what I believe is the true origin of the dollar sign - $. And it's kind of hard to argue with the idea ;)
