Looks too "new" to me...but I'm no expert... Experts weigh in please???? http://www.ebay.com/itm/1829-Early-bust-half-dollar-/170958791265?_trksid=p2047675.m2109&_trkparms=aid%3D555003%26algo%3DPW.CAT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D142%26meid%3D4232458447878872823%26pid%3D100010%26prg%3D1076%26rk%3D4%26sd%3D200864420485%26
I can't comment on it's authenticity, but many of his other coins look very suspicious. It gives me an uneasy feeling for sure. Especially the draped bust silver dollars and the twenty cent CC piece. They all have the same look. That being counterfeit. Also, when you are supposedly selling thousand dollar, rare, raw coins... I would think the description should say something better then: "Genuine coin from collection beginning to sell."
I didn't look at his other auctions, but you're right, they're also suspicious - espeically the twenty cent one. That one looks like a casting if I ever saw one...
I don't like it. And I don't like his other offerings either. There's something weird about the look of them all. Granted, many 19th-century coins have been cleaned and re-toned, and the pics might not be well-taken, but it doesn't matter. Caveat emptor. I won't spend spend over $100 on a coin if it hasn't been slabbed by a reputable TPG. There's just way too much scamming out there.
That 1829 half has the look of being cast arround the rims to me, bad gut feeling on it & even the others he has listed.
Took a second look, and I am now certain the half is genuine. It is an O-112 or 112a All diags match and the high res pic the seller provided even shows clearly that line 3 of strip 5 extends into crossbar 2. Not buying the cast copy. Its the real McCoy
I think all of the sellers coins are genuine. Have any of them been cleaned? I saw yes, but all look genuine. Its tough to take pictures of coins.....I looked at the feedback in the last few months and there are many high dollar coins that sold with positive reviews.
Thanks for the input RR. I also checked out the feedback for the high dollar items. I was pleasantly surprised there were no negs. The only thing I didn't like was that the same buyer/buyers appear a lot on the high dollar stuff. Maybe just coincidence and the buyer has serious dough to throw at these coins.
It also looks as if he has had a few returns (1853 10C and 1886 5C to name two), which is not surprising considering the obvious work a number of his offerings have had. After having looked at enough of his listings, I would not put much weight in his positive feedback. Seems like a decent number of questionable buys from questionable buyers.
The half sure looks genuine to me , all you have to do is see if it matches a certain Overton # to be certain . AS it is It's an 0-112 .
I'd love to see this sellers coins in slabs, if only to verify as "genuine". He definitely has some high ticket items, most appear to have been cleaned at one time or another, but I see nothing that jumps out indicating fake. My opinion: all are genuine.
