Got classic coins with nudity?

It's completely outside the scope of this thread, but if true this is fascinating to me. I don't know if it's your English skills missing the American definition of "sexual harassment", or whether that statement is true, but I would find it completely stunning if it were true!

Don't think this is a question of language skills; a few weeks ago this video became famous, sort of, in Europe. (Well, commented versions - this is the original in Russian.) Here is an article in English about the problem. And yes, I guess we're OT here, but since this explains the language used in some of the earlier posts ...

one of my favorite coins. Saving up to get a really nice one like this so as to get all the "details".

 

Would suggest AU at least (which I think this likely is). 1917's a lot cheaper than 1916 obviously.

Common explanation for why the design was changed was that some found the nudity offensive lol... yet no contemporary sources corroborate that theory, and you'd think that if someone found it that offensive someone would have said something that made it into print. There has never been any official explanation for the change, just various theories of varying levels of plausibility, and nobody still alive knows why so the answer to the mystery is lost to history. (Another theory is that she was given a breastplate to symbolize America's war stance in WWI.)

I love this design too, with or without the nudity. Unfortunately, it doesn't wear well and anything less than XF doesn't look very good; it loses the details that make the design distinctive.

I believe it was "technically" illegal to change the design. Don't they have to wait 30 years or some such time?

25 years... but many exceptions have been made, and exceptions to the rule require legislation by Congress. Which judging how often exceptions have been made, doesn't appear to be that difficult a hurdle. (Franklin half dollars were changed after only 15 years. SL quarters only ran for 14; no quarters were minted in 1931, and in 1932 they changed to the Washington design.)

The 1917 Type I I posted cost me $150 dollars in what I judge to be AU condition. A lot cheaper than a 1916 Type I lol...
