So... I win an auction for a set of Kennedy halves, pay for them through PayPal (with a note that I appreciate these coins being offered), and then receive this message: Hi, I can appreciate your appreciation. I was shocked that it basically went for melt plus the face value of the non-silver, nothing for the 70-D. Sincerely, good deal for you and you will get the exact lot pictured, but honestly, I have no reason to continue listing the other 7 sets when I can melt them and spend them for the same as listing them and won't have to pay any fees. My friends have been telling me the coin market is dead, and it seems they are right. Please rest assured, you are getting the best of the best of my "Casino Finds". I'm glad the seller is honoring the sale, but now I feel like I've taken advantage of him. What do you guys think? Here's the auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Complete-Se...yvRm2ivhPKk+fmwAHmW/F6Y=&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc
Very simply put the seller put very little effort into the auction and got about that out of it. One image of a folder and no images or description of the coins. If he thinks there worth more start the bidding at a higher amount and pay the fees for doing that.
You did nothing wrong. I read the message as a veiled way to sell you additional sets outside of ebay and to avoid the ebay fees. Pay for the set, accept the set and move on.
I mean it's not like they are all cherrypicked from Mint Sets. He even describes some as XF. Any non-BU Kennedy shouldn't be worth more than FV, except the 70-D (and all the 90/40% silvers for that matter).
Selling modern coin collections on eBay can get quite expensive as I suspect the seller was hoping they would go for more than what they actually did! Typically, bidding stops at the melt/face value point for these coins in their raw state and the seller should have known this. As it sits, he actually lost money on this deal since eBay is going to slice another 10% minimum off of the final sale price and then PayPal will carve another 3% off of the entire amount. This is one reason when putting sets up on eBay, I never let it bid out but always put BIN price along with a Make Offer. At least I can control what they sell for at that point. You got a great deal and shouldn't feel like you took advantage of the seller. Be glad that your underbidder didn't go any higher!
I think he realizes if he had merely sold the silver coins plus the '70-D, he would have received approximately the same amount. I don't believe his statement that "the coin market is dead" is accurate, but if it justifies what he considers a "low ball" auction, well, so be it. I feel as though I should reply to his message in a sympathetic mannrer though.. if only to humor him somewhat.
Casino Finds? Lol. I'd say melt plus FV is about what the collection is worth. Good for you. The link is no good though - auction's been pulled.
Start the auctions at the lowest price you will take and there is no problem... that is what I do. It's not that hard.
sound like he knows his way around a Casino or two, if he acted this way over this Kennedy set then I would hate to be one of those friends he mentioned, with him, at a casino, when he lost everything in his pockets and wallet. Never be ashamed when you get a good deal; especially in a fair-market environment such as eBay! Nice Catch, Erik
here's an appropriate reply, "tough luck" Guy has almost 4,000 feedbacks and he is acting like this is his first sale or something, what a knob!
Silver billon at intrinsic, the rest at face? And then s/he pays Feebay 13% - OUCH! Seller's Loss, evidently. The coin market is moribund, eh. Canary-in-the-coal-mine!
Tell that seller to get scroogled! No not really, but I can't believe he took an opportunity to beach and moan about his financial troubles to you. My advice is don't send him any more notes, he's not worth your time.
I like how he says they are in XF-BU at first, and then later says AG-AU/BU. Not that there is a big difference because as it has been stated multiple times, the collection is worth BV + FV and nothing more. But still. I don't think you owe him a thing.
