We spend a lot of time posting and admiring the best coins out there, how about a debate on the worst? Lets be frank, some are pretty awful! Here I offer for comment the British 50p for Athletics at the 2012 Olympics. Looks more to me like a spent condom hanging on a line. And the Cook Island 2007 Diamond Wedding One Dollar - one of a whole load issued by Westminster coins for that year. I feel Gold plating cupro-nickel and applying coloured photographs is a crime against numismatics in the first place, but then to pick such an awful portrait of Her Majesty and dreadful picture of her with Philip beggars belief! What do you think?
hahahahaha you're description on the Olympic 50p is spot on! I'm not at home at the moment but I'm sure I have some ugly foreign coins somewhere
Beauty is in the eye of the belolder These are Maracaibo Leprosy Colony coins. Some of my Leprosy colony coins look like they have Leprosy.
Agreed. It is right up there with the stick-man 2 Euro coin. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=stick+man+Euro+coin&qpvt=stick+man+Euro+coin&FORM=IGRE
You always have such beautiful and interesting coins, I look forward to seeing what you consider ugly.
I remember getting some of those in change one time and thinking their king had a target on his head. But Dutch coins with Queen Beatrix are not much better.
As much as I love my collection of Britannias, I often wondered why they did this in 2003, (coin turned milky a couple years after I bought it) But then again they fixed it in 2010 and then there is also this one
Another ugly (IMHO) coin - the 2003 Five Pound coin from the Royal Mint. Looks like a toddler has been playing with the Letraset!
Wrooong. I like that design. Not so much on the 50 fr coin, I admit, but the earlier 5 fr coin in that style I find appealing. It would be worse if coins that are first issued in, say, the 1990s look like designs from around 100 years ago. So please note that the attached image shows a coin that is not ugly but has been posted for comparison purposes only ... Christian
Don't like that either. What makes it worse is that the web vote was "pushed" by some who had apparently found out that one of the designers was Greek, and then asked in many forums to vote for his proposal. Also, since that was a common issue, you had to get 16 coins to "cover" each member state. What is funny though: On that search results page, the SBA dollar shows up too. By the way, the Planck and Erhard portraits on those 2 DM coins are fine in my opinion while the Heuss portrait is not very good. But the ugliest coin from this country (again, beauty, beholder, etc.) is the attached piece which I most probably have shown before. It celebrates 50 years of German TV (regular broadcasting) and shows a ... blank screen. Christian
