I got mine today. a glacier in MS-65. I'd call the reverse MS-65 but georgie looks like he lost a knifefight with bad, bad Leroy brown, maybe ms-62 obverse. no photo ability. I may crack it out for the laundromat.... I think PCGS wasted a lot of money on overgrading pocket change and shipping it, personally. I bet that cheap slab store gets a lot of these.
I think this has been over-graded. There are several rim hits on the reverse, and one on the obverse. Also a bunch of scratches around the mint mark. I am no pro grader, but I'd say MS 63. Although I was pleasantly surprised by the grade. There are also two deep gashes at the base of George's neck. The pic isn't that great.
Maybe they just did a mass market grade where so many were 64, so many 65, and so many were graded 66.
Denver Glacier 65 as well. Not too experienced at grading, but if I had to give it one myself I'd say 63 tops. Not nearly as bad as sonlarson's, though.
I haven't recieved mine yet, but for kicks I'll send it to NGC in the slab for regrade, should be interesting. Maybe we should start a lowball competition???
I got mine today was surprised by it, the costs for shipping outweighed the value of the coin itself quite badly. The shipping cost was over 7$ for the coin. The gesticulated value is high out of my perspective and my thanks goes to PCGS for this. Regarding the numismatic value of PCGS' work I feel unpleasantly irritated over this terrible (over)grading. The coin is stated to be a MS63 2011-P Glacier NP Quarter, where the reverse is closer to MS62 (German grade bankfrisch) and the obverse to AU58 (German grade vorzuglich+; far too much going on there). This type of grading is not acceptable in Germany/Europe, for their own benefit tightening the quality control is not an option, it's a must. It would be nice for a PCGS representative to read all this criticism and react accordingly, as of yet they leave much to doubt regarding their competence.
PCGS lost a lot of my respect on this BS promo, they essentially bought bags of quarters and just graded them all MS-65, without even looking at them and wasted tons of money debasing their product. I may as well crack it out and use it for laundry. They could have made it interesting by throwing in a mix of coins like a buff nick, V nick IHC, BU Wheatie or other $1 type of coin instead of using laundromat quarters.
...Didn't you already threaten your FREE PCGS graded quarter to be used at the laundromat sometime last week? Well, what are you waiting for dude, just do it already and stop talking about it? It would be far more productive if you posted a picture of your "cracked-out" quarter being put into a laundry machine then all your fussing with no picture of what you got for FREE. Im also pretty sure PCGS won't lose any sleep over the loss of your respect of them for their "BS promo."
I am very glad that they shipped to your Homeland of Germany. It sounds like you know quite a bit about your Country's & European coins (non-US coinage). I understand that you are not alone in your opinions of PCGS over-grading this FREE promo. However, respectfully, I don't know how coin grading standards work overseas, but here in the US, it would/SHOULD be physically impossible for any coinage that comes directly from the US Mint (bags, rolls, or mint-sets) to be graded AU58 or AU anything. Example: if a coin were minted from the US Mint and then thrown on the ground at the US Mint and picked up and swallowed by a US Mint employee; then regurgitated out of the stomach of the US Mint employee back onto the ground, then picked up and stuck under the armpit of the US Mint employee. Then that same coin (that never left the US Mint), were put into a US Mint bag or roll or mint-set.... It would still be mint state, probably MS60, but non-the-less, if it was never circulated outside of where it was struck; it could/SHOULD never be AU. Another example: you go to a grocery store and get back in your change, a coin that looks perfect to you, like MS69 perfect, it is still AU, probably AU58. I also understand it is near impossible for myself or any TPG to see it that way, but technically; it SHOULD be that way. Also, like I stated above; respectively, here in the US, AU58 is THE prime example (with the utmost eye-appeal and luster) of a coin that has been lightly circulated, hence, if it were heavily bag-marked or just plain ugly, but still AU, it would NEVER receive a grade of AU58. This is why, IMO, that AU58 US coin collections for 19th century US coinage is so sought after and respected far above that same collection being MS60 or MS61. MS is exactly what it states, the state the coin was in as it left the mint, regardless of how banged up or perfectly struck it was. I hope I didn't offend you or anyone else, but like I said, I don't know how it works in Germany/Europe.
Ohh Goodie, my wife got hers today... Pics to come; I'll try and get really good ones and maybe do a GTG here in this thread. I know that pics probably aren't as cool as they should have been, considering they're only either GC or Glacier, but I started this thread to get some pics going, so why not get back on topic. P.S. I feel PCGS may have over graded some, if not most of these quarters. From a Collector of many (MANY) things outside of numismatics, as I am. I feel that with the A+ reputation that PCGS has carried since their beginning, that someday these over graded quarters bearing the PCGS name on the slab might be somewhat more collectible in the future vs. if they were all properly graded... Kind of like an error of some sort
I saw a MS-66 2011-D Glacier ATB quarter on eBay for $16.95. Wonder how many will try to sell these and make a profit?
...lol, good for them... But even if you sold it for face value or spend it, or sell it for 1 cent; you still make a profit considering it was FREE. I am flabbergasted by anyone who could or would complain about something that was FREE. I mean even the guy who wants to crack it out for the laundromat still complains that it wasn't good enough, even though it is 25 more cents that he doesn't have to ask his mom for to wash his clothes. I suppose they can have their cake and eat it to, right? No wonder the world is supposed to end in 8 days
