Nope, the real thing. Bought it at the Chicago International Coin Fair about 20 years ago for $175 (which was an outlandish amount of money for a medal at the time).
While on the subject of medals: Of course I have many others from Belgium, France etc. But June Cleever whispered not on Cointalk again.
It is huge, I think 77mm or something and is bronze. I like it because I collect the 1897 10HFL coins in gold and these have the very same portrait but this one is much larger.
I have one French medal that is 86mm and weighs 12 ozs. I thought I had photos, but I can't find them. Oh, well! Here is another beauty...... Chris
Chris, that medal is just beautiful. I have been looking at medals, but at $100 minimum for something nice, I have to be choosy.
Funny you should mention the 10 Guilder in gold. With this particular portrait, a slightly better world gold coin though nothing really rare. Never the less I got burned on a struck counterfeit of it. Was a gram light, didn't know until I went to sell it. Don't think you have to worry about it with this medal though ;-)
The fakes were likely made in the East Indies now Indonesia and early in the 20th century and on up to the war for independence in the 1940's.
Was only a matter of time before someone inquired... Perhaps if your photo had coin pics for bookends?
Thank you. John J. Pittman thought so too. The coin once belonged to him. Belonged to Hans Schulman before that. Very possibly King Farouk prior to that though no record exists.
