While this variety (N.5, R3) is known for die rust/pitting, this example has environmental damage. Possibly a dug coin. More likely just corroded from improper storage. A shame. Another one on my want list. Lance.
I have one - just no pictures. I will look around when I get home, but I don't remember ever taking a picture of it. Nice coins all.
Mike, I guess you meant 1821. A nice coin, and quite scarce in that condition. As a matter of interest, is the grade you quote the EAC or TPG grade?
Eduard, Yes, obviously, I did mean 1821. To answer your question: The coin was graded XF 45 by NGC. CAC agreed with the grade and gave it a green sticker. EAC grade is probably quite a bit lower due to the fact that they tend to focus on details on the coin, rather than the amount of wear. I'd guess they'd probably net it out to something like a 20 or 25. It's actually an interesting coin to grade for me, because it really does not have a lot of circulation wear, but was weakly struck and never had the details to begin with -- and this is an instance where you'll find a greater than normal divergence between TPG and EAC grades. The TPGs seem to take into account luster (which is actually quite good on the coin) and as-struck details rather than just looking at the details and assigning a grade based on that (like EAC or techincal or ANA grading do). Personally, and not that anyone is asking (lol), I TPG grade the coin 40, EAC grade the coin 25, and value it a touch over $1k. I bought the coin at Teletrade, of all places. And you're right -- that date is not easy to find that nice. Not as hard as the '23, but much harder than most would guess. Take care...Mike
OK, 1824 is up... Here's a spotted N-2 that PCGS graded 35. I generally don't like freckled coins, and this one will eventually be upgraded, but I like it's "character" and originality:
I can't help you guys with 1825. p.s. vote here: http://www.cointalk.com/t218484/ We can't let the FEC guys win!
Nice coins, Mark & Lance. Somehow, I got a trio of '26s. Anyone wanna trade for a nice '25? AU-53: 1826/5 XF-40:
A pair of '27s... First, a crusty/cleaned N-2: Second, a nice AU-58 example of an N-11: Lance, that's nice for a 20!
Mike ! You still got that MS61 with the original faded mint red ? I think it was an 1816. Post up that thang !
