Lehigh - you actually came to his (BNB's) defense pretty strongly when pretty much everyone was down on him. Your message being "let the kid gamble his money if he wants, and stop beating him down." Of course then you told him that none of the criticism was personal but people trying to help. It didn't help much. What I find psychologically fascinating with BNB is, if you read the threads from the beginning, while he does care about the monetary factor somewhat, he really just wants to be respected and liked by members of this forum. That is why he gets so upset and takes everything personal, even when someone offers an opinion like "I think your coin is a G-6" or "You'd be better off buying a slab, or at leastr a coin book first." This was a massive cry for help and attention. What makes it truly fascinating is that as I understand it he is now a massive ebay scammer who doesn't even try to cover it up. I'm yet to confirm that.
I came to his defense because we were friendly, and still are. This was the first coin forum that he joined and he came in like a bull in a china shop. He was young and desperately wanted to become an expert on coins. Unfortunately, he thought that process took about a week and became very defensive when others started to question and criticize his numismatic knowledge (or lack thereof). Eventually, his exuberance in combination with his defensiveness got him banned from every major coin forum on the internet. He was selling coins on E-Bay as BNBCoins at the time and made some mistakes including the long drama about the AU58 3-legged Buffalo Nickel with a fingerprint on the obverse, but I would not go so far as to call him a scammer. Because of his reputation on the coin forums, he was forced to change his E-Bay name. Since then he has been selling coins on E-Bay without any problems. I just checked Toolhaus and he hasn't had a negative since March 2010. Furthermore, I think my actions did help my friend Jay. He has grown up quite a bit and is serious about becoming a professional coin dealer.
WHY WASN'T I INCLUDED (maybe because you don't mpost in the "What it's Worth" section of Cointalk). But anyway, welcome to Cointalk. I'm FE21, the spam wizard and coin collector, and I've found Cointalk to be one of the best coin forums on the internet. WELCOME!!!
Lehigh, I apologize as I did not mean to bring up the bnb situation as a major topic of discussion. I only mentioned it as I do find it fascinating how people can just walk into a situation where they know nothing and tell experts that they know more than them, and I see you agree that it is definitely entertaining. I haven't gotten to the buffalo fingerprint thread yet, although I believe that is what was alluded to on another site that made me end up searching his posts. I imagine that there are other people on here who this topic makes somewhat uncomfortable, so I will drop it now. I am glad to hear that you get along with him and that he is a reputable dealer. My apologies if any offense to anyone.
I am not offended at all by any of your posts. I think it is great that you are reading old threads and discovering some of the great threads and characters from the past. I do remember how mean people were to him and think it is a good idea not to dredge it up again. However, I am not sure how many people even remember him at this point.
I wasn't here with BNB, but from your post Paul Detecto comes to mind. I know young guys who think they know it all can come off the wrong way, but to me the way some people treated that young man was shameful. If people would have said to me what they said to him, I would be pulling IP addresses......(just kidding, but I for sure would no longer be on CT).
I usually feel the same way. But this is a coin forum, and I never really got the idea that he (Detecto) wanted to talk about coins. IMO, the members were way worse towards BNB. Mostly due to the fact that BNB would fight back. Detecto just blows off the rude posts or reports them. BNB would fight to the bitter end.
