Exactly lol... I'm a coin collector, not a package collector, and if you want any more proof that this set isn't worth what they're charging, just consider that the cost of a silver proof set + an ASE costs less than this, despite that giving you more coins. There is absolutely nothing special about this set because there is nothing special about the coins; it's just the same coins you can already get elsewhere in a different package.

You may not find that wrappings have or add any value, and that's fine, but there are people out there that think so, and it seems to me they are in the majority. Why is it that ASEs, AGEs, APEs and 5 ouncers are wanted by so many in OGP? The OGP does add value. Maybe not for you but for most people. Calling it no more valuable than a bucket of your own feces only shows how small minded and insulting you are to people that have values different from your own.

If a majority of people think something stupid, it doesn't make what they think any less stupid. The uninformed outnumber the educated, that's true. There was a time that people were willing to pay ridiculous money for beanie babies, some even hoarding them as an investment, until the fad died and they realized there was next to no inherent value in them. Long term I think that's exactly what will happen with this. This set has no inherent value beyond the sum total of the value of the coins it contains, and right now paying $150 for this means you instantly lose money on the deal.

I think what I think and will not apologize for thinking that people who think differently are most likely wrong (until I see evidence that I'm wrong, then I'll change my views). Call me small minded if you will. But I don't think a majority vote is the basis of knowledge. At one time, a majority of people thought the sun revolved around the earth. The people who thought the earth revolved around the sun were right even when the majority disagreed. The majority probably thought those that said they were wrong were being insulting to their beliefs. So what, they were wrong, they deserved to be insulted.

P.S. Take your signature to heart; it greatly applies here.

P.P.S. Yes I know there's a different between things that can be proven or disproven factually, and statements that are merely opinions. But "monetary value" is something that can be measured, and I honestly believe this will not have long-term monetary value when people realize there's nothing inherently special about the coins in this set, and long-term I think this set will be considered a novelty at best and not worth any significant premium over what its contents are worth separately. Maybe I'm wrong; we'll see. But I think paying $150 for this thing hoping it will go up in value in the future is a sucker's bet. I think you'll lose value immediately on the initial purchase. And until I see evidence to the contrary I'll go right on believing that. Want to call that being small-minded and insulting to people who have different values, go ahead. But right now I think I'm better off owning $150 than owning this. And if you want to accuse me of being foolish for thinking that, I'll say I think you're being very insulting to me for holding different values than your own (works both ways, you see).

Anyone with me in thinking the mint should be spending its efforts trying to come up with new coins rather than ways of re-marketing and re-packaging coins they already make?

"the mint should be spending its efforts trying to come up with new coins rather than ways of re-marketing and re-packaging coins they already make" is the only thing I agree with you on. The rest is just bullying.

There is no other greater proponent for OGP than this old sod, and no, it's not because of the so called pretty packaging......but I do, in many cases like it. I know the extra bulkiness of the product packaging takes up space, but I'm willing to deal with it. It's how I collect. When I decide to purchase something from the mint, it's based on what I need to keep my collection up to date in any given year. If I happen to miss purchasing something in a given year I'll seek it in the aftermarket. The aftermarket product has to be in OGP or I don't want it. Simple as that.

Now, the subject product of this thread is superfluous overkill........for me. I don't need the coins in this set. I've already gotten them in the form of other product packaging's from the US Mint. But lets step back for a second and take into thought what another collector might feel. Perhaps he doesn't collect the same way as I do. Perhaps he doesn't want all of the product offerings that the mint provides (and I buy) and he just wants the sampling of coinage provided in this set. Yeah, he knows he may be paying more, but why should he go through the hassle of ordering three separate products to achieve his need, when he can have his cake by ordering one? Simple as that.

Besides, he likes the pretty packaging..........

This set has LOSER written all over it!

Sure, some may sell for a premium right out of the gate to some sorry chap who doesn't know squat about this stuff but over the long term, these are just losers. Not even a complete set but simply a bunch of silver sold at $72 an ounce by the US Mint.

The product was designed for "id 10 t's" who'll order them and then tune into The Coin Collector to resume buying their gold plated State Quarters.

"Packaging" only counts with 1804 Presentation Proof Sets. Of course, there are certain collectors who really want that original cardboard Proof set Box or perhaps that cheapo COA.

Unitl, that is, they realize how much space all these oddball shaped sets actually take up. Thats the primary reason (aside from losing my butt) that I stopped my insane drive to have two of every proof set of uncirculated set ever made. It was a pointless, dead end, venture that cost way more than what it was worth.

Slight correction here lest some newbie actually gets confused:

ITS NOT A LOW MINTAGE SET...................Its a "collectible packaging" set where only 50,000 of the sets "packaging" will be produced and released to the public.. Every coin within the set has relatively "high" mintages.

Don't be surprised if your $150 +shipping purchase turns into a "melt -10% product" in a year or so.

A WAG is that the ship date keeps getting pushed because the "packaging" did not arrive as scheduled from China. As such, they still have to coordinate the actual packaging and boxing of the sets before any can be delivered.
This is really sensitive and collectible stuff you know!

Hmmm. I wonder how many of the folks who weren't able to order their 2011 Anniversary Sets and then screamed to their congress people are actually ordering this one?

While JJK78's analogy is way over the top and extremely crude, what he's trying to say is asolutely correct. Those folks that demand original proof set packaging or COA's will wonder why they paid such a premium when it comes time to "get rid of" the collection. Sure, some might get lucky but a vast majority will walk away scratching their heads while mumbling "I thought the packaging added value?

Coin Collecting is about colecting coins not about collecting what the coins were shipped or packaged in unless the packaging has some historical value in "numismatic terms". (The original packaging of the 1804 King of Siam Set comes to mind. The toning imparted to coins within the double US Mint sets of the 50's comes to mind. Waite-Raymond Coin Holders comes to mind.)

Coins, in and of themselves, are nearly indestructible if stored properly but the packaging, COA's, and boxes, will definitely wither and fall apart from dust and the inevitable dust mites, bacteria, mold and fungus, lunless significant sums of money are investing in creating a non-destructive, controlled storage environment.

Ever notice the smell that some "original packaging sets get? Especially those from the early 60's and late 50's. Thats mold, fingus and mildew at work there folks. Paper products require special storage and handling otherwise, they simply fall apart over time.

Besides, since the packaging for these "2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets" was more than likely made in China, whose not adverse at all about using lead based paint for our childrens toys and whose not adverse at all about shipping pesticide enriched foods over here, there's really no telling what adverse affects long term storage in that packaging will have on the coins.

This is a definite pass as far as I'm concerned. Especially since there is absolutely nothing unique within the set other than the fancy schmancy box the coins are in.

Now, if a doubled die coin shows up which is unique to the set, I'm gonna wish I'd ordered some but I've dealt with that type of disappontment before so no biggie.

    IMG! I almost forgot!

    Anybody interested in this one:

I realize that its only a Washington Proof Dollar coin wrapped in some fairly significant packaging (The book shelf package is quite nice and the intaglio print within the package is a top notch collectible) but do you think I could get more than the original purchase price for it ( $19.95 +$4.95 shipping) ?? These were sold about 5 years ago and the offerings came out with each presidential dollar release until the end of 2008 where the product was dropped in the "house cleaning program" of the US Mint. From what I understand, less than 4,000 of the Martin Van Buren Signature Set was released. Thats about 46,000 less than the 2012 Limited Edition Silver Proof Sets.

Surely there must be some value here over and above the $24.90 I've sunk into these?

Let me just be clear that I actually like the packaging of this "limited" set, better then standard proof sets as the regular coins are not that special to me, personally I just collect the silver proof sets for the silver proof coins. That being said I still stand by what I said. All of these coin are or were readily available throughout the year and this is just an overpriced attempt to move more product. If they had released it earlier in the year I would definitely been all over it, but no thanks.

Oh and for those of you who took my comment too seriously, get a sense of humor and watch this clip from Tommy Boy, maybe you will get it then...

Instead of "low mintage set" I used earlier, I should have phrased it, low packaging set. The only coin I "need" from this set is the 2012 W ASE Proof. I'll end up buying on the secondary market eventually. I won't buy coins I already have just to get it though. I like OGP as much as the next guy, but this set is still silly to me. However to each their own.

In today's (on line, paper edidion out next week) edition of Coin World, there is a story about ASEs.
The story reports that OGP adds $5 to the value of ASEs when selling to retailers like APMEX.

Some may think that, to them, OGP is worthless, but, the fact is, there are many so called "stupid" people out there that value OGP.

No collector should ever call another collector "stupid" just because their tastes are different. That kind of attitude simply shows a lack of respect.
