Pretty sure the eagle you are talking about is from 1984. This is one of the very few modern commems that I wished I owned.
Yes...I went back through the posts but I missed it. I do like that eagle a lot. Amazing toning on that one too!
Two notes regarding the coins in posts #25 and #26: These German ones are, strictly speaking, not dated - with such special coins, the year of issue is usually on the eagle side. In this case it was not done, so the only reference is the "1972", the year of the Munich Olympics. However, the six issues came out between January 1970 and August 1972. (Later issues, such as the pieces for the Football World Cup 2006, did have "actual" dates on the eagle side.) The Austrian commems issued for the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck are special in that they were made by two mints: the one in Vienna (which makes all modern Austrain coins) and the one in Hall, Tyrol. Hall is close to Innsbruck and once had a famous mint (which these days is an attractive mint museum). So it was decided to have the Innsbruck '76 pieces made in both Vienna (mintmark: the city's CoA) and Hall (mintmark: the Tyrolean eagle). Christian
Interesting fact about the Hall mint Christian. Now I like the coin even more. It reminds me of Franz Klammers downhill run at the Hanenkom (sorry for the spelling).
Hiddendragon, I've been eyeballing that Greek one with the weightlifter on it. Thanks for posting those coins!
Very close - and who knows whether they would have issued them without the Olympics coming up. The 1997 coin is about the Athletics Championships; the one dated 1999 celebrates the Weight Lifting Championships. By the way, the Athens 2004 Olympics were also the occasion for the very first commemorative €2 coin. Note that instead of "Αθήνα", this piece uses the English "Athens" ... Christian
Regarding the Mint marks - where is it on these Austrian coins? Maybe I am just blind - or is it one of the shields? Thanks! Paddy
A couple more - Austrian 100 Schilling for Innsbruck, and a 2011 British £5 produced as part of the hype for the 2012 event. (No surprise they picked cycling as a feature!) The latter is scanned in its issue holder which accounts for most of the marks.
What Ripley wrote. I would vote for "obverse", but bottom is right. See here, underneath the word "Schilling": Wien/Vienna: http://mashopsimg.com/kaufmann/pic/11201_100_schilling_1975_oest_gebaeude_mzst_wien_vz-st.jpg Hall: http://mashopsimg.com/kaufmann/pic/11202_100_schill._1975_oest_gebaeude_mzst._hall_vz-st.jpg (Oh, and ignore the fingerprints, hehe.) Paddy, your 100 schilling coin was minted in Vienna; Hall only made some of the "square eagle" issues. Christian
That's great - thanks! I had assumed my 100 schiling would have been in the right bracket, but clearly not.
Sure thing. There's two more coins in this style that I plan to get in the next few days. I bought all these from a guy in Greece on eBay for a very reasonable price. He still seems to be selling them if you are interested.
