Die Variety of the day

    Hi all,

    Doing another die variety day. This one is a strong memorial cent repunched mintmark, listed as 1985D-1MM-001 on coppercoins.com. You can clearly see the remnants of a secondary mintmark to the southeast. Enjoy!

    Nice find NC. What was the last year the mint struck the mint marks separately?

    I think you mean the last year that the mint added the mintmark directly onto the working die, and therefore the last year you can have a true RPM. That would be 1989. After that, the mint began adding the mintmark to the master die, and then as time went on, it was included in the initial design I believe.

    One interesting year would be 1995, where Denver-minted doubled dies show doubling in the mintmark. This, however, is due to the doubled die, and is not actually a repunched mintmark.
