i have read that a 1963 run of the 6d was accidentaly released into circulation and only 4k made it out but why is there a 1964 issue when the federation was gone ? it just doesnt make sense too me ? can anyone shed some light on it for me please ?
Hello Mark, I personally do not know the answer to your question. Your question probably would have been seen by more World coin experts if it were posted in the World & Ancient section of CoinTalk. Forgive my lateness in meeting you here. Welcome to CoinTalk. :welcome:
I have a full coinset of southern rhodesia, rhodesia (after the federation) and I only need a shilling for rhodesia and Nyasaland I just can't help but wonder why they made some after the break up and where the **** would it have circulated when the coinage was kaput I will post in the correct section, I just struggle to navigate in this forum its very us orientated lol thanks
Cannot answer the first part (why there were made with that date), but the second part is easier: They simply stayed in use anyway, along with the other federation pieces. At least that is what Wikipedia says: "The Rhodesian pound replaced the Rhodesia and Nyasaland pound at par and the coins and banknotes of this earlier currency continued to circulate." Christian
Up until the 1930s South African banks were issuing sterling denominated paper money in Rhodesia - for circulation only in Rhodesia so apparently the currencies were not traded at par.
