Here's my Barber dime and I'd appreciate any opinions on its grade. Thanks!

Angled photos make judging luster tough.

That said, I'd think the coin would be somewhere in the low AU, high XF range.

    I'll guess AU 50.

It's in a flip right now and admittedly hard for me to determine how much is luster versus reflection of from the plastic.

If you can safely, take it out of the plastic, and shoot it dead on straight with the light as close to the camera as possible. :)

Still hard to tell from the new pics but my first thought is, something tells me it was improperly cleaned at one time. Seems like too much grime between the finer details, primarily the lettering. The angles now tell me there is no luster, probably due to the possible cleaning at one time.

My grade = Improperly Cleaned - Details

I think it does lack luster and probably was cleaned. I thought the darkness between the letters was caused by shadow? I need to get a magnifying glass! LCS sold it as XF-45.

The last set of photos do suggest some luster impairment which could have been caused by an improper cleaning.

However, I would like to see pics with the light source closer to the camera and not at quite so much of an oblique angle to the coin. This will bring out whatever luster remains on the coin.

As you move the light source closer to the camera, the coin will be much more evenly lit and the luster (to the extent it remains) will come into view.

If, after re-taking the photos, the coin still looks "flat" and lusterless, then chances are it is cleaned -- because that XF/AU coin doesn't have enough circulation wear to completely remove the visible luster, as a coin in the F to VF range would be expected to be virtually lusterless a coin in the XF/AU range should have some visible.

Except, hopefully, your coin will have some luster left. :)

There is more detail left than a typical XF Barber for sure. AU50-53 cleaned.

The very even color and lack of luster do suggest a dipping. I cannot see evidence of a harsh cleaning (e.g. hairlines). A great coin for a 2x2 or an album, IMO, and I stick by my AU 50 grade assessment, except perhaps if the coin's luster is truly burnt then the value may drop down into the XF range. Not a huge difference in the value of this coin at those grade levels anyway, so not a financial big deal one way or the other.

Appreciate all the input everyone! It's a nice coin and when I bought it even the store went back and reconsidered the grade they'd labeled it. Looking at some other XF coins I have this one seems like its a little more lustrous then others.

xf 40 cleaned in my opinion.the cleaning helped the coin look nicer i guess, but it did not fix the worn spots.

  20. I'd say XF40 detail. Some of your pics show a lot of parallel lines on the obverse like it was dipped and then wiped off. But not harshly.
