Pulling out the silver proof quarters has been my most productive way of getting 'free' silver. I have picked out 3 Proof Statehood Quarters over the last 12-18 months when handling change. I rarely see any other silver as I think most people are keen to the pre-65 mantra now, but they may not know how to check for silver from sight and sound. I guess thats why I keep finding these, I check my change thoroughly and i guess it just doesnt occur to most people that kids and drug addicts crack open proof sets all the time to spend.

I do wonder why I never see 1965-1998 silver proof quarters in circulation though, seems to be just the state quarters. I guess it had to do with the coin revival from the State Quarters popularity and there are just more of them around

 

After 1964 (and 1970 for halves), they didn't again make silver proofs until 1992 or so. I forget the exact year. They did make 40% silver Ikes and 1976 .25-1.00 during that lull though.

 

I knew that! Somehow I forgot to incorporate that into my thinking and subsequently my post, but I knew there was a gap in the proof sets. I feel silly now, thanks for the little refresher

 

Sometimes I have an odd feeling before i come into work, those days usually lead to me finding a nice coin, like today, found a 1947 wheat, 1969s nickel and a 1944 D war nickel, also while changing in penny's found someones discarded motorcity 5cent slot machine coins

My sister is a manager where she works and does bank deposits. She goes through and counts the registers for the next day's business. She is always finding something. She isn't a collector, so she is nice enough to save stuff for me when she has the money. I have never personally found anything of interest besides a few wheat pennies where I work. Here is the silver that she has found so far:



She also found a red seal $5 and saved it for me.

 

Save those. They probably aren't worth anything, but Motor City has switched to paper slips (like everybody else). I have a few old Casino Windsor 25 cent tokens.

EDIT: I also found an old Grosse Ile bus token while searching nickels once.

 

Here are my 2 latest finds, a 1983s silver proof and a 1968d error penny. The penny has a section of where the metal stuck to the die and was re-pressed down and struck, divot and metal are identical in shape and size including the rim edge

 

Today I got 2 coins worth mentioning, first was a 1954s nickel in great shape for its age, sorry no image, bu my next find deserves one. found my second proof in 2 days, a 1991s proof

Today's three wheat cents: 1946, 1951-S, and a 1919. When I found the 1919 it looked uncirculated so I first thought it was a 1958 or something like that but was shocked when I saw it was a 1919. The coin has something funky going on with it. It looks dirty but uncirculated at the same time. It is also worn so I guess it was recently cleaned?

 

Today I got a 1923 Wheat in worn but very good condition, also found my first silver Roosevelt dime 1964, great condition too. Lighting isnt the best, the Lincoln has much more preserved detail than is visible. The black substance on the dime must be tarnist, it wouldnt ully come off during its water bath, entire surface was covered before a hot soak. On a side note during penny roll searching, I found a superb blank penny planket, a few minor scratches from being with other pennies but in overall good shape, has rim but no features.

 

Over the last week I found 4 silver Roosevelt's, 2x1964p 1x1964d and 1x1960d, all are in almost uncirculated condition. Three of them on tuesday and the 1960 on thursday.
