Paper Money: New Acquisitions

Here's another recent pickup. I don't have much star notes, but I do have replacement notes...

Well yesterday I promised a San Francisco Treat, and I keep my word... gonna take a quick break from stars as man cannot collect on stars alone...

Squeaked out a win on this note that had a whole lot of bidding, happy I did, nice paper and feels great in hand, a real nice high VF example I think both front and back. Real pleased with this pickup, even though it cost me.

 

My first small size gold certificate, which is long overdue. I got a decent deal on it. I'd say it would grade a VG+, perhaps a 10. The back is a bit soiled, but there are no tears or splits.

 

Series of 1928

 

If that grades vg 10 it'll be the best lookin vg 10 i'd ever seen. Looks more like a fine 12 or 15 from the front anyway.

 

These were delivered in yesterday's mail. Series 1985 $50 FRN with a courtesy autograph from Katherine Dávalos Ortega and a Series 1985 $10 FRN wood bundle label.

 

I also received two 1976 $2 FRNs First Day of Issue with some very nice postmarks. The first note has an Interphil '76 stamp (Scott# 1632), postmarked in Raritan, NJ, "1776 BICENTENNIAL ROUTE OF YE OLDE YORK RD. N.Y. to PHILA". The second note has a 13-Star Flag over Independence Hall stamp (Scott# 1622), postmarked in Sommerville, NJ, "1776 BICENTENNIAL THE WALLACE HOUSE GEN. WASHINGTON'S HEADQUARTERS". I've never seen these postmarks before.

 

Funkee, I think Bonni is right, I bet that note slips into a F12 grade, unless there's something nasty on the reverse or the paper is truly ragged. Maybe a tiny middle split at the bottom but could just be a wear line. Nice anyways! Took me months of bottom feeding to get a good deal on my small size 10 and 20 GCs - I ended up with a couple nice VFs but I was like 1 for 30 on auctions... but then I'm cheap.

I've since loosened up the purse strings a bit and since I am going to die anyways, might as well spend it all now, so the stars just keep coming. Here's a VF25 1934-C from St. Louis, not alot of these, I think this makes the 9th known star, sure there are alot more out there but I feel good since a VF30 went for $180 a little bit ago and this VF25 I got for a third... woohoo!! A nice note is nice, a nice note at a nice price is twice as nice. Say that 5 times fast.

That label is unique, and I would guess very hard to find, especially unused. It's hard to place a value on it. Is this a eBay find? I wouldn't know how else you could track one down, except by having a relative in the banking industry.

I found this in circulation today at the bank! Unless I'm wrong there is nothing special about it and I'm just gonna spend it, but here it is all nasty! haha.

 

In its condition, it's worth about $20 unless it has a late finished back plate number 204.

 

nope it's a 300. Thanks for the tip! I have some others I got a long while ago I'll have to check that are in a "little" nicer condition. Still rough though. I just couldn't believe you can still find these in circulation here and there.

A new day, a new star, I picked up a slew of stars and they've all come in at once. This includes some $5's which I pick up far less often than the $10 and $20 stars. This star has seen some wear, but it is 1) a star 2) a lime and 3) there aren't any in T&P. Fives got used so heavily that they tended to wear quick and this note can testify to that. Still, glad to get another $5 and of course any lime note is always welcome...

Rear is not so good, hence my VG-10 estimate.

We'll take a short break from the stars to focus on another new pickup in the FRBN arena - specifically, this very nice Cleveland district note. Nice bright snappy paper and sharp engraving, looks great front and back. A little rust maybe on the edge but it doesn't distract much, especially since the rest of the note is so distractingly nice. One of my best 1918 Ace's, love it.
