I would think on a coin such as this, they all would have been accounted for one way or another and that is why the numismatic books have used one number over and over again.
Looks like a a serious form of coin addiction. Some of my recent fix: KM# 14 MARK 5.5500 g., 0.9000 Silver 0.1606 oz. ASW Ruler: Willhelm II Obv: Denomination within wreath Rev:Crowned imp erial eagle with shield on breast Note: Struck from 1890-1916. 1902 D 1907 D
1912 J And thanks to the package I got from Derick (for free!), there are now some Chilean coins added to my collection. (my turn is to send Derick some coins next)
Yes thank you, finally a bit more time to be active here and take pictures of my coins. I see you bought the other 1834 Real too, was it possible for you to negotiate the price down?
Good observation and NO unfortunatly. These coins are to difficult to find and non negotiable. I think this is it for me and Chile early 19th century coins. Not going to make the target, have the money, but nothing to buy. Good specimens are very difficult to find. It seems like auctions are the next step, like Heritage. Not sure if I want to go there? My contacts and best dealers in Chile are running out. Some are selling mostly US silver bullion coins. I bought the coins that I wanted most, Volcanic peso, Gold 8 Escudos, 1971 2 Escudos and 1960 5 Centesimos. There are two left that I will get.
Thanks Mat. Yeah I understand your problem, I'm looking for a truly perfect specimen, so far I had no luck and all of my coins of that era have their minor issues. Specialized auctions may be the next step, but it would be a huge jump for me. Did you take a look at the Gold Pesos Derick, they're offered in reasonable grade at bullion $ level (20 Pesos KM# 158/168/188, 50 Pesos KM# 169/184 and 100 Pesos KM# 170/175? the coins listed for Chile here: http://www.coininvestdirect.com/en/gold_coins/ Isn't the 10 Pesos KM# 157 an interesting piece?
Some impulse purchases at the Aurora Coin Show yesterday; 1995 British Pound: Almost better than the coin was this great insert in its original packaging, a reprint from an 1893 political cartoon complaining that the Welsh dragon was left out of British coinage (at the time of course, it was featured much later on some pound coins): Speaking of dragons, also found this in the bargain bin, 1983 5 won coin from South Korea: Love the dragon boats/ships (and depictions thereof). Have a model of one as my going away gift from my time at Osan AB when I was in the Air Force.
Yes it is very nice. I am looking at it, and like you said, close to bullion price. Good option. The 100 pesos is somewhat big. I am in contact with a company that might help bringing coins through customs. Today, I got something extraordinary, a design test piece of the modern 50 pesos coin featuring Lautaro on the obv and not O Higgins as we know it today. As far as I known, there is only one know specimen.
I saw your 1817 peso and it is a nice coin. I am glad you found one. Chile's Volcano coinage has always been scarce and in demand, but it seems that lately their popularity has increased even further. Can't believe the prices people are paying for the 1834 real. Also, all pesos besides the 1817 date seem to have disappeared. I have only seen very few offered in the last 5 years. I will let you know if I come across anything that may interest you.
A SOL that is not a dwarf Found this piece today. It is common, but not cleaned and have a nice golden toning like the sol suppose to be.
That would be great thank you. Did you get a nice 8 FJ reales at the end after the fake auction story.
Unfortunately not, at least not without having to get a second mortgage on the house. Santiago 8 Reales columnarios have become just too expensive. That is OK, though. I have other Chilean coins which I am happy to have in my collection. This is a Santiago 8 Reales dated 1817. A scarce coin since minted in the very first months of chilean independence in 1818, and the patriots who took over the mint were not happy minting coins for the new republic bearing the portrait of the spanish king. Not a spectacular coin, but a scarce one with about 10 known.
Here some chilean minors: a 1792 cuartilla (1/4 real), and a 1834 half real. Nice to see some interest in Latin American coinage in the forum. I lived in both Peru and Chile during my childhood before returning to germany, and remember fondly the countries and their people. Derick, I know Iquique quite well. We lived not far from there.
Really nice 34 Chilean half Peso. As mentioned I too have had a lot of difficulty in finding nice Chilean coins over the past 5 years. In Latin America I've been spending my $ on Mexican, Argentine, Peru, and Colombian which seems plentiful. Got in a couple of auction fights over Chilean coins which I lost, despite going to fantastic prices you wouldn't believe for the pieces. These were early Republican issues.
I am sorry to hear that, and you are right - that is one reason why I mostly stopped buying chilean colonial or republican issues over the last few years. I guess those were Heritage auctions? I have seen the same thing at auctions in Spain; they usually have some nice chilean coins as well (primarily from the colonial period), but the prices there too have risen. I was told that the rise in prices was partly due to much increased collector demand from Chile itself. So I guess the coins are going back home. I am glad I was able to find most of what I wanted back in the late 80's to early 90's. You used to be able to find volcano pesos from dates besides 1817 and 1822. I have only once or twice seen another date besides those 2 in the last 5 years.
