WoW(!) Monster coin, I hope you've owned it for a while. If the avatar got you in hot water, your 8 Escudo might get you thrown out of the house if its a new acquisition.
Talking about unwanted coins and scooters, I go to Santiago maybe twice a year looking for some nice coins. Last time I did not find what I was looking for so I bought these with a lack of judgement. They were quite expensive for me. I have not look into it in more detail. Are these common and of any value? Do not even know if I cat them correct.
I'm sorry but it is not possible for me to look up any coin data right now. I would really like to but it is not possible. We are installing a new wall at my home & the room is being freshly painted & carpeted. All my books (and stuff) are stored in boxes for the next week until our work is completed.
Hi & thanks very much. The 1840 Cuzco is out of the Millenium Spring 2008 auction which I attended in person. It was $2,600 not incl "the juice" [15%] and is one of the early Athena types I really crave. Thus it was much cheaper than Teller's coin. Since I saw it in person I liked it. As mentioned the Cuzco gold has a proof-like finish which didn't come out too well in my photo. A Latin American specialist told me at the time that "people liked the silver crowns" and the gold was unliked & really many unc 8 escudos were selling for the same prices as unc 8 reales, despite being "really tough" in mint state. However since 2008, gold has become hotter and all that's changes. Now I buy the 8 reals [silver] and can't touch the 8 escudos. The avatar coin was a bit more, even more than Teller's piece but medallions of this era are quite uncommon. Also I like the period for historical reasons.
:thumb:Here one I found @ my buddy's coin shop in the melt bucket. you see 1945 a lot but here 1944-D 10c centavos
Nice Republican 8R's of Bolivar. What were you looking for in Chile that you didn't find? I know that over the past few years Bolivian 8R's have become [much?] more expensive.
A nice VF or XF 8 reales FJ KM 51 or KM 80. Do not have a FJ 8 reales from Santiago. I am always looking for some gold Escudos and countermarked coinage also. No real luck. I do not buy coins from ebay or any place outside Chile due to customs issues. Had very bad experiences. Therefore it is sligtly more difficult.
I think they changed the #'s since my Krause manual on Latin America came out. I could find neither of those #'s although a KM 81 is a Colonial 2 escudos. By FJ 8 reales from Santiago I presume you mean the common Volcano type as illustrated? Sorry about the poor photo quality. I bought this on the floor from Jeff Zarit at the NYICS back in the World Trade Center. He had 2 of them, the one I didn't buy had a flan flaw. It was reasonably priced ($750) but he might have sold it since then (12 years ago). I have never bought a coin from Ebay but have bought coins in person in the US and in Argentina. Do you know Carlos Jara, he's a numistmatist from Chile? This is the only Volcano Peso I have but I'm very interested in getting a few nice Chilean coins-- it's very difficult tho. I also got the Condor 8R type [below] but wasn't too happy with it as it's circulated. Still I guess I should be grateful for anything these days. My friend has these types 39 & 48-49 in unc but he has no Chilean gold! The name in the files indicates that I did not take this photo myself (also as you can tell it's not blurry!), rather I just used the auction Co's photo.
Very nice peso, never seen it such good condition. I have bought a coin from Carlos Jara a few weeks ago, but do not know him as such. I am still looking for the condor 8R type. Tell me when you want to part with it.
Early copper nickel dos centavos, KM 147 1875/6 with 108,000 minted. Was changed to copper 1878 (147a). Not many good specimens left.
I won these 2 weeks ago on auction for a great price; they finally arrived in the mail today. 1900 E, 5 Mark, KM# 1246, Albert I / Saxony – It’s in alright shape and has a mintage of only 157k. 1913 E, 3 Mark, KM# 1275, Battle of Leipzig Centennial / Saxony-Albertine (dipped) 1901, 2 Mark, KM#525, Friedrich I & Wilhelm II, 200th Anniv. / Kingdom of Prussia – The toning on this one looks very blue under direct light, unfortunately that is hard to photograph. These are not necessarily high dollar coins, but they now have a permanent home in my collection.
Is there anything more fun than the anticipatory drool as a letter is ripped open with coins inside? can't think of anything else myself...
The experience is made even better when the coins are in a box, mailed registered mail with reinforced paper tape with imbedded fibers. Especially when the package has just been fished out of a post office box, and the only tool available is a set of car keys to cut open the tape. Always fun to see the look on other post office patrons faces as I rip open the package like a drug sniffing dog who has just had all his neurons lit at the same time on a positive scent.
ZAR Veld pond 986 or 530? What do you guys think about this? I have this coin as a family piece. It has a great history. Could the letter be true and why was the mintage then not updated? http://www.tokencoins.com/article/jun06.htm
